Judging by the recent Vanity Fair article and how LucasFilms is moving forward with Star Wars, it looks like they've quietly admitted to themselves that they absolutely botched the sequels. They're basically springboarding nothing from the sequels. Obi Wan is spinning off from the prequels and original trilogy, Ahsoka is jumping off from The Mandalorian and the animated series, Andor is coming from Rogue One, etc. Nothing is springing out of the sequels.

I still can't believe they had no unified, overarching storyline before they started the sequel trilogy. You ended up with three movies that didn't even seem to be part of the same story.

At least they were smart enough to pause any additional Star Wars movies and not rush them through.

Just wait for the Mandolorian to spend some time with creation of the First ORder. Same with Ahsoka etc. In no time they'll slowly work on the sequels like they did with the prequels and Clone Wars.

They're not distancing themselves from the sequels. They're going to slowly work on it. And in 20 years kids will remember it like SAV remembers the prequels and hate on old heads. It's the vicious cycle of Star Wars.

Mandalorian already is dabbling in things that people hated with the Sequels. And with Grogu using force heal before Rey, you knew that was going to show up that film as Grogu was infinitely more popular than Rey. Which is a force power I hate. LIke if that just existed how the **** did the Jedi not know it. Why couldn't Obi Wan have done that to Qui Gon, why wouldn't Anakin have been able to learn that and not be seduced to the dark side? So on so forth.

Star Wars has had a Pantsing issue with their writing. But people like it better in some formats as opposed to others.

You must not talk to a lot of people.

Last Jedi is near peak star wars cinema. It's not quite the marvel of A New Hope, or the near perfection of Empire or the almost Lucas Opus that is Revenge of the Sith. But in a world with Episodes 1, 2, 6, 7 and 9. Last Jedi looks like something amazing.

Again, I look forward to being vindicated in the near future.

While The Last Jedi was trash, that issue has been well litigated here. The problem is that even if you liked The Last Jedi, the sequel trilogy as a whole is still an absolute mess that makes almost no sense. The tug of war between Abrams and Johnson was so bad that any kind of coherent story was destroyed in the process. There are still scenes that have no explanation and make zero sense because aspects of the story kept being created by one director and abandoned by the other (this applies to both directors).

The prequels had specific problems with either characters (JarJar) or acting (Portman and Christensen) and there was a lot of backstory that didn't get told until the animated series. Once the story was fleshed out, the prequels just had some bad characters and bad acting that could be overlooked for some of the better aspects. But ultimately, there was a coherent story that actually wasn't that bad. The sequels don't have that. If they're going to save the sequels, it won't be fleshing out untold portions of the story, it'll be rewriting large portions of the story.

JJ Abrams ruined the sequel trilogy with the last film. It sucked. A decent finale would have made a serviceable trilogy, not the hot mess express we got that's what Disney has to live with. That they let the POS that is Rise of Skywalker get released instead of delaying it for a few years and putting something better out.

The real problem with the prequels is that Episode 1 doesn't need to exist. It's a backstory movie that could have just been trusted. Like we never saw Obi Wan defending Duchess Satine, but they talked about it and showed it a bit in their personal relationship and that was it.

Can you imagine instead and episode 1 being episode 2 with some fixed holes to it but more just fixing the pacing you can end before the battle of geonosis properly takes place (like the military siege. Like end it right after Yoda/Dooku battle) Episode 2 would mainly be about the clone wars and the fall of Anakin. Episode 3 would be about the rise of Empire, Jedi Hunting, and Padme, Organa, and others setting the proper start to the rebellion.

But that's jsut a simple man's simple opinion on that.

Sequels issues are mainly that JJ is a **** closer. Always has been always will be. That was their mistake. Honestly anything else could have been better than Rise of Skywalker.

Trevorrow's script was so much better than JJ's.

    JJ sucks, that's it.

The problem with the sequels is they started with no overarching story line in mind and then went back and forth between Abrams and Johnson. I feel like if Abrams or Johnson either one had been able to make all three you'd at least have had a story that made sense. They might not have been good but they at least wouldn't be the ridiculousness we saw.

Instead you basically had two directors refusing to tie their movie(s) in with what the other was doing. You either needed all three to be done by one director or else to have a steady hand above them guiding the story.

Neither director could put their own ego or vision aside and work to build on what they were given. Johnson tossed aside the mysteries Abrams was trying to build and instead of rolling with it, Abrams tried to bring back story elements that died in Last Jedi.

I agree about episode one being largely a waste of time. The fall of Anakin was laughable in the movies. He went from paragon of Jedi virtue to child killer way too quick. An entire move should have been invested in his downward spiral.

I think Abrams did what he was asked to in the first sequel, bring back the Star Wars magic with a hefty dose of reminiscing for the old fans and new stars for the new fans. Johnson stepped in and thought the universe needed more angst than a 90s Seattle grunge band for some reason, and most everyone hated it. So Disney begged Abrams to do what he did with the first movie all over again to wash the nasty taste of Johnson out of everyone's mouths.

The real villain is Kennedy for having higher priorities than making it a great sequel series.

I agree, they should have had a more set story. But I think it still coudl have been good if we got Trevorrow's Duel of Fates. Tied all the films together. Instead JJ just said ****it. Again it falls on Disney, they deserve all the hate for it. They overreacted to neckbeard outrage over the Last Jedi. If Last Jedi wasn't review bombed people wouldn't have hated like they do. Again I look forward to being vindicated in years.

What should Johnson have done to build on JJ's mystery boxes? Like how should he have dealt with it? I think he set things up to be so amazing for the 3rd movie then they ****ed it up royally.

Ready imagine this instead for the star wars nerds. Ep 9. Kylo Ren find a holocron (not a wayfinder, ****ing dumb) of Darth Plagueis in Snoke's room, instructing Kylo to come to visit him on Mustafar. Kylo being intrigued and with the First Order playing whack-a-mole with the resistance. Rey finds in the texts a location for the well of the force or something like that (hint, it's Mortis) she goes to Mortis with R2. Poe, Rose and Finn as leaders of the Resistance are talking about a final strategy to revolt against the First Order and attack the new capital of the first order, coruscant. Poe drops finn and Rose off at Coruscant where they work on building a revolution from the lower levels of Coruscant with people that hat ethe first order. Finn can unlock his force powers at some point and reach out and break the coding on storm troopers he went to the academy with releasing them and elading the revolt. Poe goes to find Phantom Squadron and recruits Wedge and goes and finds Lando who's basically Lando of old running a planet etc. they agree to lead an assault on Coruscant. Finn has a force vision of a Jedi Temple, he visits it and activates a beacon. He records a message that is broadcast from every jedi temple on every planet leading a large scale insurrection. First order is scattered thin. Eventually Hux commits suicide seeing the first order going down. But back to kylo. He finds out that Plagueis trained snoke to corrupt and train Kylo so Kylo could unleash the Sith empire but first he has to take dominance over the force, Plagueis takes Kylo to Mortis where they encounter Rey. Plageuis tells Kylo to Kill Rey, He duels and defeats her. Then there are any number of ways to conclude this. It's revealed that Rey was created by the force to lure Plageuis here so he could be defeated, she had to die so Kylo could turn to the light. But anyway it ends with Kylo defeating Plagueis with Rey's help. And him staying on mortis to fulfill Anakin's destiny of bringing balance to the force as the new father, master of both th elight and dark while Rey goes back out into the world to train the next group of Jedi in the ways of the force properly.

Or any other number of ways. Not ****ting on all 8 star wars movies before it, Anakin's sacrifice, etc.

I think Johnson should have built on Abrams mystery boxes. Instead he just blew them all up. Rey's parents? Nobodies. Who is Snoke? Doesn't matter, he's dead now. There was an opportunity of a nice story of parallel journeys of discovery. Rey could be finding out where she came from (Luke? Obi Wan? Qui Gon?) while Kylo is discovering Snoke's past and identity. I might not have been a great story but it would serve the continuity.

You can disagree as to whether the mystery boxes were a good idea. Personally, I wouldn't have put them in. The Skywalker Saga was never about mysteries, it was about the heroes. However, once they were in there you don't just summarily get rid of them. It makes for a Checkov's Gun scenario. When you set up a plot point and just abandon it, it's bad storytelling.

Then you had Abrams trying to bring the mystery boxes back into it in the third movie which just made things even messier.

It was clear Abrams and Johnson had very, very different visions for the trilogy and neither was willing to try to actually work with what they were given.

I'm honestly not sure how I would have done Episode IX. The story was such a mess by that point that making a movie to make the trilogy make sense might have been impossible.

I posit again, who was Emperor Palpatine as established by Episodes 4-6. Who snoke was doesn't matter. Who's Rey's parents were was never made important in TFA. What was established was that she was abandoned and longed to belong. Rian Johnson answered where she belonged. Found Family and all that jazz.

Mystery boxes were pointless and dumb. If Rey was Palpatine's granddaughter it should have been mentioned by someone. Her lineage mattering wasn't what mattered. To the point that people were dissecting things that didn't matter. Like how Leia or han greeted Rey and Finn, etc. If he wanted Finn to be force sensitive, make him. You're right, the mysteries in Star Wars were not mysteries but more twists. Luke's parentage didn't really matter "Your father was a Jedi I fought alongside in the clonewars" "he was the best pilot I knew" etc. you just accepted it as fact that Obiwan knew his father and his father was a jedi starfighter pilot who darth vader killed. The twist of Vader being his father was a twist, not a mysterybox. Similar to Leia being his sister. That was a twist. Not a mystery box.

Anyway. Obi Wan launched, first 2 episodes were interesting. There are aspects I won't judge until later. Maybe the things that happened so far will be for the better. But I give them credit for a believable way of getting Obi Wan involved.

    Yeah that was bad....lmao

Also, not sure how I feel about that Sister knowing that Anakin is Vader. I feel like it's been established previously that it's a very well kept secret (Tarkin and Thrall figured it out on their own because they worked closely with Anakin). Vader even shut down the Grand Inquisitor when it looked like he was getting close. I'm sure they will make it make sense that she knows and she possibly dies in the series (maybe by Vader) but still don't like it. lol. We'll see how it plays out.

I think we'll see some connection that the girl was one of the younglings shown in the temple. She probably saw the holovid of Anakin and Palpatine that Obi Wan and Yoda saw Obi Wan probably told her to hide basically the same thing he told the jedi who was killed on Tatooine. She did and was miserable and was captured by the inquisitors before joining them and she views Obi Wan as betraying her.

Or it's just known in the Inquisitors which isn't out of the realm of possibility. The people who answer directly to Vader probably want to know as much about him as possible to hopefully supplant him and become a Sith Lord, I'm sure that's the goal.

My gripe was her seemingly killing the Grand INquisitor, but we'll see how this plays out. She may not have killed him, or the one we know from Rebels just hasn't shown yet, but I consider that unlikely as Fifth Brother looks a lot like the same fro mRebels. As does the GRand Inquisitor. But maybe now we'll get a Jason Isaacs Grand Inquisitor that we deserve.

At this point? No. He knew Padme was pregnant but thought the kids didn't make it. I think Palpetine told Vader he murdered Padme in his rage but I'm not 100% on that. Either way, once he feels Luke's presence in EP 4 he does some investigating and finds out the truth prior to EP 5.
