So what would a best-case scenario be for our major-league lineup right now, assuming no other deals for current players?

Mine would look something like this:

    C - Bethancourt
    1B - Freeman
    2B - Peterson/Castro
    SS - Aybar
    3B - Olivera
    RF - Markakis
    CF - Mallex
    LF - Toscano

Obviously it looks like Olivera won't be at 3B, but if he's not there, I really have no idea who will be. I'm assuming we'll see mostly Pierzynski at C, Garcia at 3B, Bourn in CF, and Olivera in LF.

    Would've preferred Nick Kroll.

I will miss Maybin. Really enjoyed watching him play.

Everyone penciling Bourn in as starting CF need to ease up. Don't want that option to vest. First half of the season yes, but second half he has to git.

Just dumped cash here. Hoping they actually use it and in a good way. Not more old crap players that'll be here for a year.

It doesn't matter, Maybin is still young......we could've used him in 2017

Maybin seems like a great guy, but I'm very happy to see him traded. We are literally better off without him. I had speculated that we'd need to swap him for a non-tender candidate making $2-3m in order to move him, and we actually did a little better than that. Players coming back aren't too valuable, but they're really just icing on the cake.

Missed an opportunity to trade Maybin at the deadline last year. It would no have been a bonanza, but probably could have moved all his money and gotten a slightly better prospect return.

I just keep scratching my head trying to figure out what planet the management is on and where the heck they are heading....... we went from having the youngest team in the majors (2014) to now sporting one of the oldest it seems, plus 30 players.. Bourne, Markakis, Swisher, Olivera, Pierzinski, Moylan, Grilli, Garcia, Aybar. Seems like a strange way to rebuild. Sure our rotation is young but really all these old guys are for what means??

Pretty much in agreement with everything said here. I'd be excited about the salary dump if I had any idea what the plan was to do with all of this cash. Should be interesting.

How much cash do we have now. We saved 6 with maybin. And another six with Simmons. Am I missing anyone.

So 12 million on top of the roughly 25 million we have to spend.

Yep, if they wont spend now in a GREAT FA class, then when?

    Next years FA class blows.

We didn't save on Simmons. Aybar is making $8.5m this year, they sent $2.5m, so it is a wash on the contract.

This is the exact kind of trade for Maybin I did not want to see. Either use him in a package to beef up the return, or keep him to be one of the few average players on the roster.

It's all irrelevant though because Mallex was going to get his shot at the CF job after a few months whether the current starter in CF was Maybin or Bourn or Eury.

I'm just baffled at how disjointed all these moves appear to be. Why dump Maybin's salary for 2016 immediately after taking on the additional salary of Bourn/Swisher for 2016, just to free up some of CJ's salary for 2017? Wouldn't it just make more sense to cut CJ loose and keep Maybin, this saving all the 2016 money owed to Swisher/Bourn?

Very, very odd series of moves. Each one makes some sense in a vacuum, but combined they don't seem to follow any type of plan.

Getting your hopes up thinking we will be spending it man. Gonna sit as a surplus if there is one.

Beat writers are now using $30m figure as our starting point. I assume this has the likely non-tender of Minor baked in. Simmons trade is a wash. We've added $3m of payroll in AJP, $0.5m in Krol, and saved $6.5m in Maybin. So seems we have $33m.

Yea, it's hard to follow a lot of these moves and what they're adding up to. Will have to see the end result to really judge.

Rajai Davis is a decent FA option to replace Maybin. Similar shaky defense in CF, but his bat complements Bourn well. Last 3 years against LHP: 307 / 353 / 500. That is not a misprint. Also, a plus baserunner. Likely to command less AAV than the $ we saved on Maybin.

Bahhahahahaha. You knew 100% sure any return would be more damn pitchers. Gave him away for money that will line Liberty's pockets. Pitiful.
