    Braves acquire RP Ramirez

    Atlanta Braves
    @Braves
#Braves acquire right-handed pitcher Jose Ramirez from the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named later and/or cash considerations.

Is this good or bad or more likely inconsequential?

He was ranked the M's 28th best prospect. Seems like a decent, live arm. Has to make the team out of Spring Training or be exposed to waivers.

I know we have a member of our FO who came from the Yankees that suggested Banuelos and Eury Perez. Hopefully it's the same guy and he has some knowledge that makes this worthwhile, If not I'm sure it won't be a big loss of a PTBNL

Strictly a camp fodder addition. As if the Braves don't have plenty of those currently on the roster.

The actual PTBNL is probably contingent on this guy making the roster and/or staying in the organization.

Here's is Baseball Reference Page: http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...d=ramire011jos

Pretty good minor league K-rate. Went from the Yankees to the M's as part of the Dustin Ackley deal at the 2015 deadline.

Relief arms are the most unpredictable in the game. You get enough of a crop of live relief arms and you'll hit on a few who manage to put something together for at least a year. Odds are he doesn't do anything but having an arm like that doesn't hurt.

Agree 100%. Looks to have a big arm and that's the order of the day in the bullpen of today. Here's a 2014 scouting report on him from a Yankee fan blog: http://riveraveblues.com/2014/01/pro...ramirez-98807/

Kiley: Ramirez is one of the most exciting players on this list; in the linked video, he hit 100 mph with a 70 changeup and an inconsistent slider that flashes average to slightly above. His problem has been like Heathcott; he’s can’t stay on the field, but Ramirez was big league ready at least a year ago. None of Ramirez’s injuries have been to his arm, but to his oblique, caused by a lack of body fat and his quick-twitch movements on the mound. The big league staff has been fighting to take him north with the team the last two seasons, so if the training staff can keep him healthy, this is relief phenom-level stuff

Well, I guess we know why we got him then haha.

This is why adding Kiley helps so much initially, though. It's hard for somebody who has to focus on other things as well to keep stock of as many players as Kiley knows about. I'm sure he developed a list pretty quickly of guys he really likes we could get for relatively little.

Is he taking a spot on the 25 man Roster, or is this a minor contract with invite?

Love this move. It never hurts to get electric arms for basically free.

I can't imagine we're putting him on the 25-man. If we are, we're dumb.

I wasn't sure if we had to or not? sometimes MLB rules are crazy. He was on Seattle's 40 man roster so wouldn't he need to be on ours or run the risk of being exposed to Rule 5?

We're talking about a reliever with two very, very good pitches. If he's healthy then there are probably a lot worse arms we could take north with us next spring.

The more I read the more I love getting this guy. If he can somehow stay healthy, there's a very good chance he can establish himself as a useful reliever and maybe more. He's got late inning reliever kind of stuff. We're not competing next year so I could think of a lot worse things than throwing some innings to a young arm with potential.
