    January 1st:

    1927: The Brooklyn Robins release future Hall of Famer Zach Wheat after 18 seasons with the team.

    1961: Detroit renames their ballpark to Tiger Stadium.

    1970: Chub Feeney takes over as president of the National League.

    1974: Lee McPhail takes over as president of the American League.

    1982: The Cardinals home becomes officially known as Busch Stadium.

    1918: The Dodgers trade Casey Stengel and George Cutshaw to the Pirates for Burleigh Grimes, Al Mamaux, and Chuck Ward.

    1977: Braves owner Ted Turner is suspended for one year by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn due to tampering charges in pursuit of free agent Gary Matthews.

    1986: Bill Veeck, former owner of the Browns, Indians, and White Sox, dies at age 71.

    1992: Frank Viola signs a free agent deal with the Red Sox.

    1920: The secret deal for the Red Sox to sell Babe Ruth to the Yankees is publicly announced. Red Sox owner Harry Frazee receives $125,000 for Ruth and a $300,000 loan from the Yankees.

    1973: A group led by George Steinbrenner purchases the Yankees from CBS.

    1974: The Yankees name Bill Virdon manager.

    1977: Mary Shane joins Harry Caray, Jimmy Piersall, and Lorn Brown in the White Sox booth, making her the first female broadcaster to do M.L. games on a regular basis.

    2005: With the approval of Commissioner Bud Selig, the Diamondbacks trade Randy Johnson to the Yankees for Javier Vazquez, Dioneer Navorro, Brad Halsey, and $9 million.

    2005: The Angels announce they will become officially known as The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

    2008: The A's trade Nick Swisher to the White Sox for Gio Gonzalez, Ryan Sweeney, and Fautino De Los Santos.

    2013: The Indians sign Nick Swisher to a four year deal worth $56 million, including an option for a fifth year worth $14 million.

    2001: The Mariners sign Ichiro Suzuki to a three year deal worth $14 million.

    2009: Twins owner Carl Pohlad dies at age 93.

    2009: The Rays sign Pat Burrell to a two year deal worth $16 million.

    2010: The Braves and Troy Glaus agree to a one year deal.

    2011: Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven are elected to the Hall of Fame.

    2011: The Rangers sign Adrian Beltre to a six year deal worth $96 million.

    1914: So the batters can better pick out the ball leaving the pitchers hand, baseball determines that all parks should have a wall in centerfield that is green and blank. It becomes known as the batter's eye.

    1942: Bob Feller reports to Norfolk to enlist in the Navy.

    1964: A's owner Charley Finley announces a two year deal to move the team to Louisville. The A.L. owners would eventually deny the move.

    1981: The Padres home ballpark in San Diego becomes known as Jack Murphy Stadium.

    1997: Phil Niekro is elected to the Hall of Fame.

    1997: Peter O'Malley announces the Dodgers are up for sale. The family had owned the franchise since 1951.

    2010: Andre Dawson is elected to the Hall of Fame.

    2015: John Smoltz, Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, and Craig Biggio are elected to the Hall of Fame. It marked the first time since 1955 that four players were elected in the same year.

    1985: Lou Brock and Hoyt Wilhelm are elected to the Hall of Fame.

    1992: Rollie Fingers and Tom Seaver are elected to the Hall of Fame. Seaver gained the highest voting percentage in history (surpassed by Ken Griffey, Jr.).

    1991: Gaylord Perry, Fergie Jenkins, and Rod Carew are elected to the Hall of Fame.

    1995: Mike Schmidt is elected to the Hall of Fame.

    1996: For the first time since 1971, the BBWAA do not vote anyone to the Hall of Fame.

    2001: In a three team deal, the A's acquire Johnny Damon, the Devil Rays acquire Ben Grieve, and Roberto Hernandez goes to the Royals.

    2002: Ozzie Smith is elected to the Hall of Fame.

    2003: Eddie Murray and Gary Carter are elected to the Hall of Fame.

    2008: Rich "Goose" Gossage is elected to the Hall of Fame.

    2014: Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and Frank Thomas are elected to the Hall of Fame. It marked the first time since 1999 that three players were elected in their first year on the ballot (Nolan Ryan, George Brett, and Robin Yount).

    1977: The Dodgers trade Bill Buckner and Ivan DeJesus to the Cubs for Rick Monday.

    1983: For the third time, Billy Martin is named Yankees manager.

    2000: Carlton Fisk and Tony Perez are elected to the Hall of Fame.

    2000: Hall of Famer Bob Lemon dies at age 79.

    2008: The Indians rename Jacobs Field to Progressive Field.

    2010: The Reds sign Cuban pitcher Aroldis Chapman to a six year deal worth $30.25 million.

    2005: MLB and the Players Association agree to a new steroid testing policy. First time offenders would be suspended ten days and a fourth offense meaning a lifetime ban.

    2009: The Brewers agree to a one year deal with all time saves leader Trevor Hoffman.
