It would be hard to pass on Groome at 3 if he's there, but if it means getting Lewis/Ray at 3 and another top 15 guy at 40...I would be all for it.
no doubt.. but man, why gift Groome to #4 or #5.. The first day of the draft will be very, very interesting.

Except you don't know who will actually fall to 40... if there's an elite talent at #3 you gotta take him - you only get so many chances to pick this highly in a draft.

I mean why hope you can get an elite guy to fall and then hope to have enough money to sign him, when you could just make it easier and get that elite guy at your spot in the draft? At this point our system has built quite a bit of depth in some areas, we need more potential impact guys.

you don't hope.. The Braves have 8 + million slotted for #3 and #40.. if you add in #44 you have almost 10 million.. So then you talk to Lewis/Rutherford and say, I am going to give you 4.5 million signing bonus.. then talk to another high end prospect and tell them to let teams know you are not signing for less than $4 million.. Then take that guy at 40 because everyone passed on him.. Now that is a very crude explanation.. but that is how it works.. Teams are basically negotiating with two top 15 talents and using the money pooled together to get them.. so the question becomes, is it better to get a top 10 talent and a top 15 talent.. or get a top 3 talent and hope for a top 30 talent at 40....

The answer is you don't hope. Overslot arrangements are made before the draft. If you tell player X, that you will pay them the #4 slotting bonus when they aren't expected to be picked until picks 5-10, then their agents inform teams that player X won't sign unless he's paid at least Y amount. That's why these guys drop.

I think we should go after Corey Ray, but if he and Groome are off the board, then it may make sense to make a deal like that with Rutherford and sign a guy like Senzel at underslot.

Boy, I do like the thought of Senzel and Blake in the same draft..

    The ideal scenario would be....
Try getting one of Groome or Rutherford with the #3 pick
and then ATTEMPT to get them to sign with us at #40 (by telling other teams they won't sign unless they get x amount of money, which we MAY have) or just another elite talent.
    MY ideal situations in order:
1 (the GOLDEN one): Groome (#3) and then Rutherford (#40)- give them $5-6 million each and then under(very underslot) with the next few picks.
2: Groome (#3) and then Benson (#40)-give Groome around $6 million and then Benson $4 million and underslot for the next 2 ish picks (btw, Benson has signability issues0
3: Rutherford (#3) and then Benson (#40)- just because we might be able to pull it off without going too overslot

This would give us two elite HS players. Not sure if any of this is possible, but if we can pull it off, we're golden in this draft (similar to the Astros' draft of last year).
And anther thing to note is that we could just try getting the players to pull an Allard (or rumored to have been), when they say that they will only sign with the Braves and not with anybody else, no matter how much $$ is offered. But for them to say that, we would have to prepare to go around slot for #3 and then overslot for #40 ..

We would absolutely not be able to get both Groome and Rutherford. And if we got one of them at 3, we wouldn't be able to go much over slot at 40. The Astros had quite a bit more money last year than we do this year.

I like the thought of Lewis then Benson.. you could sign Lewis for 5.5 million and then pay Benson 4 million. That would eat your #44 money too, but that is not a big deal getting two stud hitters like that..

plus Copi has said he is always looking to trade for another draft pick.. getting another comp pick would be pretty cool..

It's typically a college player taken early that signs under slot, then a high school kid taken later that signs over slot. This is exactly how the Astros got Daz Cameron, who said he wouldn't sign for less than $5m. Teams passed on him in the middle of the first round because they didn't have the slot money to give him $5m, and it was all set up so he could sign his over slot deal with the Astros, who picked a college player in Bregman early.

Lewis is a consensus top 10 guy, but not a top 3 guy. If the Braves offered to pick him at 3 and give him $4-$5m, they could then pay top 15 money for a high school kid at 40.

Not saying this is how they will/should play it, but it's an interesting thought.

Keep in mind the total draft pool is 12 million. There's no way the team can use over 10 million on two players unless we can pick up another draft slot in a trade.

Additionally, high school players have leverage (going to school) so they aren't the type where you could take them under slot and feel comfortable with them signing.

Then would Lewis-Groome/Rutherford be a better dream? Underslot Lewis for $4 million (2 million left over I think). Then agree to give Groome/Rutherford around $5 (over by TOO much).
And somebody said above, if we could trade for another CBA pick, it'd be great.

I really want Kyle Lewis at number 3 and Will Benson at 40 or 44.

Corey Ray is tearing up the 2nd best conference in the NCAA (not too far behind the SEC).

He's had a really good year. Just shows how absurd Seth Beer's year is. Unfortunately (but thankfully), we probably won't have a shot at Beer.

Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

I personally like Rutherford more than Lewis.
But Lewis is a close 3rd (Groome is my number 1 like he is for most).
I'd love if we can underslot Lewis at #3 (for around $4 million) and then sign Benson or Rutherford at #40 for around $4 million.
