    March 27th:

    1967: Juan Marichal ends his 29-day holdout by signing a $100,000 deal with the Giants.

    1973: The Twins Jim Perry becomes the first player to use the "10 and 5" rule, when the pitcher accepts his trade to the Tigers for minor league pitcher Dan Fife and cash.

    1973: Denny McLain is released by the Braves, effectively ending the career of the pitcher who won 30 games in 1968 with the Tigers.

    1981: Due to his contract being received from the Red Sox two days after the deadline, Carlton Fisk is declared a free agent.

    1989: Sports Illustrated exposes the gambling allegations against Pete Rose. The article alleges Rose bet from the dugout at Riverfront Stadium using hand gestures from an associate.

    1992: The Brewers trade Gary Sheffield to the Padres for Ricky Bones along with minor leaguers Jose Valetin and Matt Mieske.

    2002: The Cubs trade pitchers Julian Tavarez and Jose Cueto along with minor league hurler Dontrelle Willis and catcher Ryan Jorgensen to the Marlins for pitchers Matt Clement and Antonio Alfonseca.

    2012: Frank McCourt sells the Dodgers for $2 billion to a group led by former baseball executive Stan Kasten and Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson.

    1970: Commissioner Bowie Kuhn announces All-Star balloting will return to the fans.

    1986: The Red Sox trade Mike Easler to the Yankees for Don Baylor.

    1988: Phil Niekro's career comes to an end when he is waived by the Yankees.

    2014: The Angels and Mike Trout agree to a six year deal worth $144.5 million.

    1867: Cy Young is born in Gilmore, Ohio.

    1954: The Cubs fire manager Phil Cavarretta after telling reporters the team had little chance to finish in the first division. He becomes the first manager to be fired during Spring Training.

    2001: The Rockies Todd Helton signs an extension for nine years worth $141.5 million.

    2008: 115,300 fans attend an exhibition game at the Los Angeles Coliseum between the Dodgers and Red Sox. The game celebrated the Dodgers 50th anniversary of their relocation to the West Coast.

    2013: The Tigers and Justin Verlander agree to a seven year deal worth $180 million.

    2013: The Giants and Buster Posey agree to an eight year deal worth $159 million.

    1966: Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale end their holdout from Dodgers camp, agreeing to deals of $130,000 and $105,000 respectively.

    1978: The Indians trade Dennis Eckersley and Fred Kendall to the Red Sox for Rick Wise, Mike Paxton, Ted Cox, and Bo Diaz.

    1984: The Yankees trade Graig Nettles to the Padres for Dennis Rasmussen and minor leaguer Darin Cloninger.

    1992: The White Sox trade Sammy Sosa and Ken Patterson to the Cubs for George Bell.

    1993: In the Peanuts cartoon strip created by Charles Schultz, Charlie Brown hits a game winning home run, his first homer in 43 years:


    1995: New York Southern District Judge Sonia Sotomayor rules that the owners use of replacement players is in good faith in terms of negotiation for a new collective bargaining agreement. Her decision end the 232 day old players strike.

    2006: Resulting from a recently released book that detailed Barry Bonds' alleged performance-enhancing drug use, Commissioner Bud Selig names former Senator George Mitchell to investigate the use of steroids in baseball.

    2012: At 49 years old, Jamie Moyer makes the Rockies Opening Day roster, making him the oldest starting pitcher to do so.

    1958: The Orioles trade Larry Doby and Don Ferrarese to the Indians for Dick Williams, Gene Woodling, and Bud Daley.

    1961: The Pacific Coast League's proposal to have a designated hitter is rejected.

    1968: The A.L. expansion franchise in Seattle becomes known as the Pilots.

    1993: Bill White resigns as N.L. President.

    1996: The Mariners defeat the White Sox 3-2 in 12 innings in the first season opener to be played in March.

    1998: The Diamondbacks lose to the Rockies 9-2 in their first game. It matched the 1962 Mets and 1977 Mariners for the most lopsided loss for an expansion team in their first game.

    1998: In their first game as a N.L. team, the Brewers lose to the Braves 2-1.

    2007: The Cardinals defeat the Indians 5-1 in the first Civil Rights Game, which was played at AutoZone Park in Memphis.

    2013: In their A.L. debut, the Astros defeat the Rangers 8-3. They had been in the N.L. for the first 51 years of their franchise.
