    Coppy on Swanson and Albies

I thought this tidbit from a recent twitter Q & A was interesting. Speaking about Swanson and Albies he said:

"They will both be playing SS everyday at levels TBD."

I think this makes a lot of sense. Keep them both at their position of maximum value until they show they can't play there at the major league level. It suggests to me that (barring some very unexpected developments in spring training) Swanson will go to AA and Albies to High A.

Our AA infield would probably be Swanson at short, Ruiz at third and Camargo at second.

At High A the infield would be Albies at short, Valenzuela (who we got from KC in the Jonny Gomes trade) at third and Obregon at second.

Yep, this is what I figured would happen. Getting them 'comfortable with each other' in a double play team just doesn't matter much. They'll get comfortable after one week of playing together at some point. Better to get a good look at both of them before calling either up to the majors because once one comes up and plays SS (probably Swanson first), it will be extremely hard to move them, so if Albies looks like the better SS, you can move Swanson to 2B or 3B before he ever comes up.

I still think it'll be Swanson at SS and Albies at 2B, though.

simply put, SS are more valuable than 2B.. Period.. so no sense in de-valuing a guy if you don't have to.

Yep. You never know what's going to happen. Suppose Peterson busts out and hits .310 this year with an OBP of .380 to .400. It's not likely but it's possible. If that's the case then you have your permanent second baseman. Or maybe circumstances force them to switch Olivera back to second and he thrives. Also unlikely but not out of the question. If something like that happens you don't want to have shifted Albies to second and devalued him. An Albies that has stuck at SS and is projecting as a starting SS could bring us a haul in a trade.

Shifting one Swanson or Albies to second should be able to be accomplished easily and quickly. Just no reason to do it until it's necessary.

I think the Braves learned their lesson about not moving a SS to other positions and devaluing him after they did exactly that with Peraza.

Not so sure anyone can say that with certainty. The Dodgers never moved him back there, and neither have the Reds.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?
