Why is the National Anthem even played at sporting events? I've never been able to figure that one out. Not a big deal to me. I always stand and usually sing, but it's always been a head scratcher of sorts for me.

57, thanks for posting the 1968 Olympics pic. This is nothing new. Former Cowboys' RB Duane Thomas had various run-ins with the National Anthem. Carlos Delgado got in a big flap over it a few years ago (although it may have been the Canadian National Anthem that he was protesting). We've got a world full of problems and this is actually news.

I'm not sure I understand your response...are you arguing the Kaep's protest is actually achieving what he wants it to? The only conversation that I've heard started is whether he is being disrespectful to the military...I don't hear anyone addressing race issues because Colin Kaepernick decided he'd sit forthe Anthem.

I'm not getting as far as saying I think he shouldn't protest, or even that I disagree with what he is trying to stand up for, just saying his message isn't landing as intended and he's not going about it in an effective manor.

The bball guys as the ESPY's, on the other hand, I thought when about it in a much more effective way.

Kaepernick's protest comes off as juvenile, something a student might have come up with. He claims his intention is to "start a conversation" about race issues, but all he has done is start a conversation about Colin Kaepernick. Had he run this idea by most people I'm sure they would have told him "umm, people aren't going to associate this with race issues at all." Putting aside whether he should be doing this at an NFL game, the bottom line for me is his "protest" is completely ineffective and whatevrr point he thought he was making was lost.

Students don't play in the NFL so that makes no sense, nor does anything else you said. He has the right to protest that way and I hope he doesn't give a sh't who doesn't like it.

I'd love to see African American players get together and bring the sports world to a stop. They have the power if they choose to exercise it.

These types of protests rarely succeed because the cultural hegemon always attempts to turn the narrative to its advantage.

My recollection is that it was while Carlos was playing for the Mets, and it had specifically to do with the military using a bombing range on the island of Vieques in PR, where he is from. I thought it was a fairly effective and courageous way to bring attention to that issue, which most Americans would probably not have been exposed to otherwise.

You post a meme that contains an implications that:

1) Seth Rich was a whistleblower and
2) that he was murdered by some dark Hillarycentric force.

When challenged, your response was that to your knowledge, everything in the meme was accurate.

Which I suppose is true, technically. Also true: that "sturg33 is potentially a closet Marxist." Dude, as far as I know, that statement is accurate.

well, first, you do see the 2 differences of your post and why they aren't the same for what i replied to, right?

2nd, well, it's been a whole week, i know you are an american but it might take more than a week of a protest to fix a problem that is a couple hundred years old but maybe i'm just crazy

I'm comparing it to students in that it's not well thought out and it's immature.

Where did I say he has no right to protest? That's not the issue at all. The issue is, is his protest effective? My argument is his intended message isn't landing because he picked a poor outlet. Going to a rally, giving a press conference, writing a column, etc would have all been better choices. Instead he's mostly just getting push back from people who think he is disrespecting the military. I'm failing to see how his statement is advancing his cause...
