Braves claim Jessie Biddle off of waivers

I guess our required monthly signing of a pitcher coming off TJ has now been met. Wonder if he's related to Rocky at all

Hmmm... former first rounder who has mainly been a starter... stats in the minors looked pretty bad but low risk with some raw talent I guess

Was a top 100 MLB prospect until 2014... just really struggled once he hit AA

The part of this that I can't figure out is . . . why didn't the Pirates just put Biddle on the 60-day DL? They went to the trouble of trading for him in February, presumably with a plan to stash him on the 60-day DL at the cost of paying him the MLB minimum salary all year. Seems like they had a change of heart on whether it was worth $500k to see if he amounts to anything in 2017 or beyond. Biddle has two option years remaining.

Don't know. Wonder if he's related to Nicholas Biddle?

Almost literally no risk here. If Biddle can regain his fastball and devastating curve he had before the injury then he could easily be a solid reliever. If he regains the change and has sharper command, maybe he's a starter.

Ultimately I think he contends for a spot in the pen next year.

One Pittsburgh web site said they intended to offer him a minor league deal, not thinking another team would do what they just did. Someone in the front office might get called on the carpet for that one. This means Biddle goes on the Braves MLB roster, 60-day DL.

Anyone else think Biddle sounds like a hobbit name?

I can confirm there were fireworks in the Shire when the Braves claimed him.
