    Kirk Goldsberry of Grantland agrees:

James Harden is one of the smartest on-court players in the NBA. Perhaps more than anyone else, he understands the rules of the game and has engineered an approach to scoring that takes full advantage of these rules. It may not always be pretty (although sometimes it is), but it is almost always productive. Between his Eurostep and his incredible ability to get fouled, Harden might be a referee’s nightmare, but he’s also one of the best scorers in the league.

Nobody has ever said what he is doing is against the rules.

But that statement basically backs up what I'm saying. Harden is aware that contact on the arms is going to draw a foul regardless of who initiates it. He has found a loophole and smartly is taking advantage of it.

“He’s an expert at it,” Rivers said. “He actually does get fouled on most of them.

"In other words, Harden draws 38 shooting fouls per 100 shot attempts close to the basket. The NBA average is 22. Harden has the highest such ratio in the league close to the basket. The only other player who’s close is Kevin Durant, the best scorer on planet Earth, who has drawn 37 shooting fouls per 100 close-range attempts."

If you want to talk about "against the spirit of the league" or whatever you made up, talk about this:

Its not a loophole. He gets legitimately fouled. Its the defenders obligation not to foul.

All of that crap should be thrown out. I've included something "my" player does with Durant and the rip move.

I have no ill will towards Harden anymore. I enjoy watching him play. What I'm doing is telling you something that is actually happening on the floor though that I do not care for.

So you are ok with rip moves and kicking your legs out on three pointers?

The RIP move is legitimate. Play defense, it's your fault your arm gets caught.

I rarely see players kick their legs out in an effort to get fouled.

    It's basically just Jamal Crawford.

I disagree with this. The point of a foul is to ensure that you aren't impeding a player from performing a basketball move. These plays are not basketball moves. They are moves to draw fouls and should be removed from the game.

The obligation is not on the offensive player to keep the defender from fouling him.

This is the definition of a foul:

    Section IV-Fouls
    a. A common personal foul is illegal physical contact which occurs with an opponent after the ball has become live.

So how would you define physical contact? Does the defensive player have to initiate that contact? The NBA is now allowing players to stay straight up and defend the basket without calling a foul on them even though the offensive player is initiating the contact. So basically that is saying that the defender is not trying to foul the opponent but the offensive player is initiating the contact. This is basically the same thing when Harden drives the ball.

    d. An offensive foul is illegal contact, committed by an offensive player, after the ball is live.

I think this is closer to an offensive foul than a defensive foul. Now of course I don't think either should be called but Harden is geting the benefit of an interpretation of the rule that I think the NBA is going to look at moving forward.

    a. A dribbler shall not (1) charge into an opponent who has established a legal guarding position, or (2) attempt to dribble between two opponents, or (3) attempt to dribble between an opponent and a boundary, where sufficient space is not available for illegal contact to be avoided.

    b. If a defender is able to establish a legal position in the straight line path of the dribbler, the dribbler must avoid contact by changing direction or ending his dribble.

    c. The dribbler must be in control of his body at all times. If illegal contact occurs, the responsibility is on the dribbler.

    d. If a dribbler has sufficient space to have his head and shoulders in advance of his defender, the responsibility for illegal contact is on the defender.

    e. If a dribbler has established a straight line path, a defender may not crowd him out of that path.

So which stipulation do you believe justifies Hardens tactic?

When defenders try to block him from the lane while moving.

They aren't trying to block him from moving. They are running side by side and Harden throws his hands up into the defenders hands.

So why have they stopped calling the fouls on shooters who kick out their legs?
