They could sign a player at a lesser deal (probably not as good of a player as Dray). They still have a ton of talent and are going to need money for Klay/Curry in the future. Do you sign a guy at the max that needs Curry to be able to provide the value to the team he does? It's not like he has an refined offensive game.

They don't need to pay Klay for a few years and I can't think of a better use of resources than locking Dray up in a pre cap explosion max. They'll have plenty of money to pay everyone.
You sign a guy to the max that helps you win titles. It's undeniable what his impact is on winning.

Hopefully the last three games of the NBA Finals finished off any debate about whether Green is worth a maximum salary. By this projection, the max undervalues Green, largely because of his sky-high RPM -- eighth best in the NBA last season.

Green was one of the best bargains in basketball last season, making less than $1 million while playing the role of Golden State's most versatile defensive player en route to the championship. Andre Iguodala's virtuoso performance during the Finals will make it hard to remember that Green was probably the best defender for the Warriors in the first two rounds, and played a vital role in slowing down New Orleans wunderkind Anthony Davis. We've talked several times about irreplaceability on this list, but Green is truly irreplaceable, and not only because of Golden State's inflexible cap situation. I don't know how many players in the league can legitimately guard all five positions well, but that list is very short (we had a guy like that in Phoenix in Shawn Marion, and he was a max player for us as well).
He cannot guard all 5 positions. I understand he's a great defender, but that's going overboard. He's not guarding 1 and 2s and he had a ton of trouble guarding centers last year (70% eFG%).
He shot 34%, which is nice, but not a great threat especially when I would be the majority of them are wide open 3s.

The part that only makes sense to me is because of the lack of ability to sign other players. Im no cap expert, but how do they build around Klay/Curry/Green if all 3 are maxed out for the future? If it's difficult to max out all 3, Green is the first one to go, imo. I don't see how you max a with such a limited offensive game.

Oh but he can guard all 5 positions. This is how I know you weren't paying attention. The Warriors switched EVERYTHING. That's a hall mark of their defense.
When you can play him at center and not get burned and he can pop out and hit 3's at an above average rate then you can comfortably call him a freaking steal at the max.
