From what I have seen of Gwinnett play I would bet atleast half of those errors on Albies would have been prevented if Freeman was the 1B. A lot of times its guys at 1B who are really DH's that can only make the routine plays.

Wait. I've been told that Freeman isn't a good defender at 1B, and his ability to shorten throws to 1B don't have any effect on the game.

he is about avg overall,and scoops doesn't really impact the game much. Best way to tell the difference is to look aat DRS (which includes scoops) vs UZR (which does not) Freeman grades out better at DRS, but not enough to think he's an elite or even above avg player there. To add to my above post: Freeman,since 2011 has 3 DRS (which puts him 36th among 115 1b with at least 300 innings during that time) and a UZR/150 of -1.6 which puts him 63rd of 115) IF, you require 1000 innings he becomes 25th of 53 in DRS and 32 of 53 in UZR/150.

that looks like the definition of dead avg to me.

Freeman issue at first is usually not as much range as some of the best there. He has a strong arm but also not as accurate with it on throws to second as you see with the best like Goldy for example. He is among the best at scoops and his reach certainly helps defenders too.

I think Cajun's original point wasn't about Freddie's defensive value, but more so about Freddie helping with Albies throwing errors.

Maybe the argument wasn't that FF is great at 1b, but they FF is far superior to the 1b at Gwinnett

Yup...he needs the rest of this year and at least a few weeks next year to refine his defense in AAA.

I think his throwing errors from SS almost certainly makes him the one that will move to 2b when he is playing alongside Swanson.

My thinking is that is defensive struggles at Gwinnett are making the Swanson/Albies combo much easier to project as SS/2B. I can see Albies following in the (small) shoes of Hubbard and Lemke as a quality second baseman for a long tenure.
