    Today In Baseball History: June

    June 1st:

1925: Lou Gehrig makes his only pinch-hit appearance in his career, batting for Pee Wee Wanninger. It begins his streak of 2,130 consecutive games played.

1937: The White Sox Bill Dietrich pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Browns.

1941: In the Giants 3-2 win over the Reds, Mel Ott hits his 400th home run and records his 1,500th run scored.

1961: After playing only six games with the Braves, Billy Martin is traded to the Twins for Billy Consolo.

1975: Nolan Ryan ties Sandy Koufax's M.L. record by pitching his fourth no-hitter in the Angels 1-0 win over the Orioles. It was also his 100th career win.

1976: The Twins trade Bert Blyleven and Danny Thompson to the Rangers for Mike Cubbage, Jim Gideon, Bill Singer, Roy Smalley, and $250,000.

1987: With Phil Niekro's win in the Indians 9-6 victory over the Tigers, he and Joe become the winningest brother pitchers in M.L. with 530, passing Gaylord and Jim Perry.

1992: With the first pick in the draft, the Astros select Cal-State Fullerton infielder Phil Nevin. With the sixth selection, the Yankees take a high school infielder from Kalamazoo named Derek Jeter.

1995: The Diamondbacks name Joe Garagiola, Jr. as their first general manager.

2007: After being ejected in a game against the Chattanooga Lookouts, Mississippi Braves manager Phil Wellman goes on an epic tirade. Wellman would kick dirt over home plate, then draw the umpires strike zone. He then tosses third base into the outfield before crawling behind the pitchers mound and tossing the rosin bag towards home plate like it was a hand grenade. As he leaves the field, he takes second base with him on his way to the clubhouse behind the outfield.

2012: With help of a missed call on a line drive that should have been called fair, Johan Santana pitches the first no-hitter in Mets history, defeat the Cardinals 8-0. He threw 134 pitches on his way to the no-no.

Note: On the Phil Wellman bit (2007), it took me a bit longer to type it because, I confess, I was laughing as I was typing.

After the game, Joyce sees a replay and tearfully apologizes to Galarraga.
