Braves currently 25th in MLB payroll

Lower than I had figured, I hadn't really looked in a long time where we actually stacked up.

    1. Dodgers - 245.9 million
    2. Yankees - 228.7 million
    3. Red Sox - 200.9 million
    4. Tigers - 196.3 million
    5. Giants - 173.3 million

    10. Nats - 147.1 million
    15. Mets - 131 million
    20. Phillies - 102.9 million

    25. Braves - 89.8 million
    26. Oakland - 87.3 million
    27. Padres - 83.1 million
    28. Marlins - 71.6 million
    29. Rays - 66.2 million
    30. Brewers - 63.8 million

A couple thoughts, forget having a top-10 payroll as some Braves officials have hinted at; if we just get to top-15; we are talking about adding almost 45 million to the payroll annually. Getting closer to the top-10 means roughly 60 million more to spend. Of course having money to spend and spending it wisely are two VASTLY different concepts.

we had a payroll of around $112 m a few years ago, it's just low now because we have no need for a higher payroll, that $$$ is better spent on int free agency and other things for year 2016.

IMO, we can operate quite well at around $120- $125m with the new stadium. That's enough to extend young players, sign the odd high $$$ free agent and still have the financial freedom to make internal deadline moves for talent.

I'll believe the payroll bump when I see it, remember, our FO can spin things anyway they want, and remember, we are not a baseball team but a real estate business so investments may not necessarily by personal on the field, but personal that sells and represents the field.

depends on if they are taking cash received from tribe and halos trade...

but we have cut Swisher/Bourn/Boni (then resigned him, so not sure about his contract)/Stubbs/Kendrick/Ryan La.

and then ate the rest of Chacin's contract.. That is around 37 million I am sure. but then we got 15 million and something like 6 from the Halos..

I have no doubts there will be a payroll bump -- the billion dollar question is 'how much'?

the Mets are right at the halfway mark at 130 million, I think with a new stadium that's a fair expectation for the Braves. I very seriously doubt we get into the top-10.

probably not next year, but depending on the success of the "year round revenue stream" of the new park and surrounding area, in 5 years??? we could be a top 10.

I don't think we need to be a top ten team to be successful tho, top half would be good enough with the farm we are assembling.

Hey look at that, the Nats payroll dropped almost the exact amount MLB was secretly giving them under the table last year.

I think the Braves have diverted a lot of money that used to go towards the payroll to bonuses for signing amateur players. They are probably going to spend $20M or more on bonuses for international guys and players from the draft. After this draft bonus splurge and a bump in revenue from the new stadium, I could easily see the payroll jumping by $50M+.

I agree. The Braves have been hovering at the 90-110 million payroll range for like 16 years now. It's great that it's never been slashed but baseball salaries have exploded a few times over that time frame so we are now near the bottom. It was just a matter of time. I will be shocked if the payroll ever approaches say 130 million or so until the team gets that new tv deal which is like 10 years away.

well, new facility should help a lot. making $$$ 12 months a year instead of just 6 has to help. Even if it is only an extra 25% towards overall operational budget that would make them be able to afford $125mish, which IMO is enough to be competitive.

yeah... but at least they got an extra $25m a year when they redid the deal. TW really effed the team with that garbage of a negotiation.(the original deal I mean)

By the time the current TV deal expires the bubble in the media rights market will have burst. It's already starting to happen a bit in college football.

The next deal will be no better than the current one. It's The Braves Way.

When they said they were going back to old school methods they literally meant it.
