I wouldn't think Rutherford would last past the Padres' two picks.
Womp.
Of course they'd go lame or go home.

Beating a dead horse I know but the Baseball America #12 prospect taken at #17 while we took the BA #13 prospect at #3. Obviously, somebody has this all wrong and I'm just praying it's not us.

Every team can go 5% over their cap. A lot of players get over slot deals, that just means they give lower slot deals to other picks to pay for it. At no point is any team giving up next year first round pick to sign Groome this year. If I was them I honestly would consider just taking a comp pick next year in what I think will be a better draft.

...and won't be able to get any other talent this year and perhaps no top talent next year, either. It may end up worth the gamble, but it's absolutely a gamble.
And the Nats exceeded their pool by $100,000 that year, just had to pay the monetary penalty. They would have to exceed it by enough to lose their 1st round pick next year if they wanted to sign Groome.

Kiley's boy goes to Yankees. If we were hoping he'd fall...
Someone made a comment about it earlier. Again. FO make stupid mistakes all the time including this one. This could be one of them. If Anderson was truly their top rated pitcher they wouldn't be paying him way under slot. And I think that's a stupid game to play. Get BPA.
Changing the system to one particular dollar amount and nothing different would probably be best. That way Coppy and Co can never be tempted to do this again.
I guarantee you the draft strategy is not dependent on any 1 or two players falling. I'm sure they have an ideal scenario but if our ideal scenario doesnt happen they have other options. What teams do is draft players who signability issues after round 10 and then they see if they can buy them out of college.
