It's based on market size and revenue, and they then have a lottery. So I don't think the Braves would be eligible for the lottery, and even if so, there's no guarantee we would get a pick.

I've been wondering if we've been waiting on the competitive balance picks to be announced later this month before making any more trades. We could match up with a contending team that also has a pick we could grab.

Dont count on it, but prepare to be pissed when the Cardinals get 2 picks.

Competitive balance picks should be given to the teams with the worst records.

Eh, you could argue it either way. It's ostensibly a way to level the playing field since teams with more revenue obviously have that advantage. The argument could be made that a team with a large revenue stream and a bad record is just bad at managing their team. And they can level the playing field more easily themselves through free agency.

The main issue is they should be doing more on revenue rather than market size. Teams with 150 mil payrolls should not be getting balance picks.

Agreed. If you have a high payroll and can't manage it right why is that the smaller market teams problem?

I refuse to believe that the Cardinals have less revenue than the Braves, all else being equal. They come damn close to selling out every game. Three out of every four fans (conservative estimate) at every game is wearing a $200 Cool Base jersey. Their TV deal wasn't given to them by an outgoing owner who happened to own the TV network and who wanted to lock down a price far below market value for the next 25 years.

St. Louis is a smaller market than Atlanta if you just consider the metro area. If MLB is holding onto that as justification for a competitive balance pick something is wrong.

There has been a lot of complains about the competitive balance picks. I think we'll see changes made.

The lottery got pushed back to January due to the CBA negotiations.

Well there goes my theory. I thought this would be the last year under the current competitive balance structure and we would take advantage of it and trade for another pick this month.
