8/11 THURSDAY MINORS THREAD ... Braves add two pitcers

The Braves have acquired minor league left-hander Brian Moran from the indy team, the Bridgeport Bluefish of the Atlantic League and assigned him to Gwinnett. Moran was in the Mariners system from 2009-2015. This season, he was 0-4, 3.12 in 38 appearances for Bridgeport.
Moran underwent Tommy John surgery in 2014 and was claimed by the Angels in the Rule V draft in December of 2013. He was inactive for the Angels and was returned to the Mariners for the 2015 season.

The Braves have claimed right-hander Wilfredo Boscan, who was released by the Pirates Friday. He was 1-1 with a 6.46 ERA in six games (one start) for the Bucs. He was added to the 40-man roster and optioned to Gwinnett.

    ---------------

    UPDATE ON DEMERITTE (from MiLB.com):
Braves 2B Travis Demeritte, Class A Advanced Carolina: 3-for-4, 2 3B, RBI, R, BB, K -- Up until Wednesday, it had been slow going for Demeritte since he joined the Braves organization from the Rangers on July 27. But after an 0-for-12 stretch dropped his Mudcats average to .132 through 10 games, he put together his first three-hit game for Carolina yesterday with two triples. Demeritte began the 2016 season as a standout at Class A Advanced High Desert, where he produced a .272/.352/.583 line with 25 homers in 88 games before the trade. Part of those numbers were no doubt influenced by High Desert's extreme hitter's park, making it interesting to see what the 21-year-old can do in a more neutral environment like the Carolina League. Eleven games are not a large enough sample to make any definitive points, but he still has a couple more weeks to prove himself before the season comes to a close.

Juan Yepez added to the GCL roster. Looks like he's starting his rehab. Hopefully Acuna isn't much further behind him.

Incidentally Wilfredo Boscan made his ML debut against us this year. Saw him in Pittsburgh.

It's funny because I've only been to two baseball games this year, one MLB and one AA game. In the AA game Akeel Morris was pitching for the Mets. Maybe I should go hit up an Angels game and watch Trout.

Don't do that, we'll end up with Lincecum instead.

3 straight great starts in a row for Newcomb.

Not extremely efficient, but few runs, few walks, and a lot of Ks.

Soroka, on the other hand, is at 77 pitches through 7. He good.

A great finish to the season would do wonders for Newcombs stock

Telling you guys, the coach in Miss. sent him a message when he went out and walked the first 4 and then gave up the grand slam.. he came back and struck out the next two before the coach yanked him.. I am sure he got an ear full about being ready to pitch every game.. I need to get his stats since that game. I bet they are pretty good.

Overall yes, though he's had two that weren't very good since, including his first start after that game.

    Overall since then: 34.2 IP, 21 H, 10 ER, 15 BB, 43 K.

    ETA: Or what bravesguy said.

He probably has 4 more starts in him this year. If he does this well in 3 out of 4, what do you plan to do with him next year?

Start him in Gwinnett and plan to bring him up as soon as he looks ready.

Soroka pitches like Maddux (note: this is not me saying he's going to be another Maddux).

He's crazy efficient for a 19-year-old. He pretty much has to be a top 100 prospect now and could soar as a prospect with a big year next year.

Newcomb walked 3 in 6 IP, which is still 4.5 per 9. He needs to cut down the walks, and still hasn't shown any signs of doing so.

I know it makes no difference and his numbers still stand for themselves, but 2 of those walks came last night after he was way up in pitch count. He topped 100 pitches in 6IP. Not very efficient but he is a SO pitcher.

Actually I think that makes a lot of difference. If it's a matter of building up stamina to maintain control late in the game, or being wild to start the game and then settling in, that's a lot more encouraging than just being wild throughout the whole game.

How he got his Ks also matters. If he is getting lots of swings and misses on pitches out of the zone that MLB hitters will just spit at, that's not good. If he is actually beating AA hitters in the zone routinely, that's good.

I haven't read anything either way about his walks or his Ks, so who knows.

Chill, dude. You act like every start you expect him to flip the switch, and when he doesn't, his star is fading even more.

He struggles with walk at this point in his development. We know this. Give him some time.
