    ---------------

    A few stories from Sunday's 19-inning contest:
Rome manager Randy Ingle has seen much during a career that has spanned close to four decades, so he wasn't particularly fazed by a game that went five hours and 17 minutes. But it was new to his hungry players, who racked up a seven-run inning en route to victory in 19 innings.
"That's a first for everyone on our club," Ingle said. "Even our coaches said it was the longest game they'd ever been a part of. We just stayed upbeat the entire time. I was really impressed with the way they handled themselves and the way they played througout the game. All of them showed tremendous life and spirit throughout the game and all of them really wanted to win. They were starting to get hungry and since we started around 3 p.m., [the grounds crew at L.P. Frans Stadium] needed to turn the lights on for us to help us finish up."
Bradley Keller doubled three times and Alejandro Salazar collected four hits as the Braves broke open a taut affair en route to a 9-2 victory over the Hickory Crawdads. Salazar began the game by striking out four times, while Keller needed the big game to raise the 19-year-old's average to .200. The two clubs combined for 29 hits, 38 strikeouts and 12 walks and featured two position players who tried their hand at pitching.
Atlanta infield prospect Yeudi Grullon made his first professional appearance on the mound, closing out Hickory on only seven pitches in the 19th. It was a move Ingle wasn't particularly fond of making.
"I'd already made up my mind that we were going to go with him, regardless of if we scored in the top half or not," the skipper said. "We used every other pitcher available to us at that point and pushed them as far as we could. We're not going to take a guy past his allotted pitch count just to win a ball game at this level and perhaps hurt his career."
Hickory's Dylan Moore (0-1) wasn't quite as lucky. The 23-year-old started the game at first base and went 0-for-8 before he was summoned to pitch the top of the 19th. He allowed seven runs -- all unearned -- on seven hits in one inning, thanks in large part to errors on back-to-back plays with one out in the frame.
The final score belied the low-scoring contest in which no one crossed the plate from the bottom of the second until Rome got a run across in the 18th. Rome pitching allowed only seven hits while striking out 18 (seven walks) over 19 innings. Most encouraging were the two scoreless innings from Alex (A.J.) Minter (who now has allowed only one hit and no runs in five professional outings) and starter Ricardo Sanchez.
"I thought all of the pitchers for both teams did an outstanding job," Ingle said. "There was some really good defense played in the game too. We had a number of guys in scoring position and just didn't get the hit. They did the same thing. Either plays were made or pitches were executed. They finally ran out of pitching and so did we."
Atlanta's No. 19 prospect Ricardo Sanchez allowed an unearned run on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings in the start for Rome. When the game went into extras, lefty Trevor Belicek gave up one hit over four frames. Bladimir Matos (1-1) picked up the win after allowing a run on two walks and three strikeouts in two hitless innings.

Would love to see strong games from newcomb and TT. I'm gonna be sick if newcomb doesn't become a big time starter

Am I the only one who thinks there should be a rule against milb games going this many innings? I think that when you combine their meager pay and the extra mileage on young arms, it's a terrible combination for games that don't really matter much.

Why, is it just because we gave up Simmons for him? Because it also depends on what Simmons becomes offensively. I'm still fine with the risk vs. reward on that one, and I was a big, big fan of Simmons.

Yeah bc of Simmons. I hate the thought of trading the best defensive SS in the world for a guy that isn't even a good Mlb pitcher. I'm not saying newcomb won't be... Just saying

We made that trade banking on aybar pulling in another good prospect I'm sure and that's falling thru

Let's not forget that Ellis is a pretty darn good prospect also.

Albies is 2/3 and really stepping it up over the last week. His AAA average is up to .241, but his yearly average is around .320.

Nice start for Newcomb. This kid is consistent mechanics away from being ridiculous.

First homer of the year for Juan Yepez. He's also starting at third tonight with Riley out.
