MOOSIC, PA - The Gwinnett Braves entered the ninth inning holding a 1-0 lead, but Bradley Roney and Maikel Cleto combined to issue four walks in the final frame as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders won 2-1 to even the Governors' Cup Championship Series at 1-1. The G-Braves lost despite allowing just one hit all night. Roney (L, 0-1) walked Donovan Solano and Chris Parmelee to start the inning, and hit Kyle Higashioka with a pitch to load the bases. Cleto (BS, 1) replaced him and allowed a game-tying walk to Jake Cave and game-winning walk to Pete Kozma.
Gwinnett had led 1-0 since the fourth inning, when Ronnier Mustelier reached on a single and scored on Sean Kazmar Jr.'s bloop double to right field. Starter Chris Ellis made that lead stand up over 6.0 scoreless, no-hit innings. Ellis worked around four walks and struck out five in a 104-pitch, 58-strike outing.
Madison Younginer continued the no-hitter for an additional 1.1 innings before yielding a pinch-hit double to Cito Culver with one out in the eighth. Younginer stranded him at second base as he retired the next two batters. The G-Braves managed just a run on three hits against left-hander Phil Coke, who struck out nine over 7.1 innings for the RailRiders. Giovanny Gallegos (W, 2-0) followed with 1.2 scoreless innings and two strikeouts.

With both pitching staffs rolling, Austin Riley provided the big hit Class A Rome needed Thursday. Atlanta's No. 13 prospect clubbed his second homer in as many games as Rome blanked Lakewood, 2-0, in Game 3 of the South Atlantic League Championship Series at FirstEnergy Park.
Riley led off the fourth inning against Lakewood starter Alberto Tirado -- who had struck out the previous four batters -- with the game still scoreless. The Braves third baseman fell behind in the count, 0-2, but adjusted to crush the third offering over the center-field fence.
"He started me with a curveball that I swung and fouled off and then came back with another curveball that I took. So in my mind, I was thinking there was a good chance he was going to come back with a fastball," Riley said. "That's what I sat on and he kind of left it over the plate. I put a pretty good swing on it."
Carlos Castro added another run later in the inning on a single to center. The lead proved enough for fourth-ranked Braves prospect Kolby Allard (1-0), who surrendered six hits and a walk while striking out nine over six frames. The 19-year-old left-hander hasn't allowed a run over 12 innings in two playoff starts.
"Honestly, he was able to use all his pitches from what I saw," Riley said. "He got some strikeouts with the curveball and got some swing-and-misses. He got some broken bats with the changeup. He just all around had his stuff."
Allard said the low-scoring win was typical of Rome's style during the playoffs. Against a BlueClaws pitching staff that led the circuit with 1,267 strikeouts, runs have come at a premium.
"We just battle," Riley said. "The guys went out there and grinded out each at-bat. Other than my big hit, I had two strikeouts, so they had some good pitching. We just don't give up until the last out. We're going to keep grinding everything out." The series continues with Game 4 on 7:05 p.m. ET on Friday in Lakewood. The Braves can clinch the Sally League crown with a win.

    Friday Game
    Rome 6 Lakewood 1

    WP: Fried 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 13 K
    Graham 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
    Clouse 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

    Salazar 3-4, 2 R, RBI
    Didder 1-3, 2B, R, RBI, BB, HBP
    Morales 2-4, 2B, R
    Riley 1-5, RBI
    Acuna 1-4, R, RBI
    Seymour 1-1, 2B, RBI
    (Rome wins, 3-1)

Bummed at how Rome laid an egg last night. The defense behind Soroka was brutal.

Mississippi usually has a strong pen and when they tied the game at 3, I thought they would pull it out.. Morris with a very bad outing.

What's got into him? Isn't this back-to-back shutout performances in the playoffs?

This is more like an Ellis start.. deep counts with walks.. but still very quality start again. lets hope the pen can hold this lead

    6 more outs to go!!

Weigel the next pitcher who seemed afraid to trust his stuff and just throw quality strikes. Allard -- no such problem.
