Dansby Swanson Already Proving He Belongs

Swanson has been terrific. I am still in disbelief the Braves got him for Miller (lol Diamondbacks).

He has benefited by some luck (.344 BABIP) but his contact skills are amazing. From the article linked, "Thus far, of Swanson’s 23 hits, 13 have been up the middle or to the opposite field. Once Swanson learns how to utilize his power a little more like he had in the minors, his value at the plate will skyrocket."

His defense has been superb as well. He's made five errors but things will iron out for him

I agree. His K% being the same in the majors as it was in AA is key for me. Just shows he is not being overmatched at this level. The 344 BABIP may be a little high (lucky) but he has a 21% line drive rate and has a hard hit ball % of nearly 32. Both of those are good numbers. Defensively he's already showing plus range and I feel the errors will drop once he settles in.

can we sit him so he can win ROY next year?

is there a chance he loses that status if he keeps playing this year?

There are 2 things that can cause you to lose rookie status:
    1. 130 AB / 50 IP
    2. Being on the active roster for at least 45 days during the time of the 25-player roster limit

I don't think 2 applies because I assume September is not considered to be a time of a 25-player roster limit. So it comes down to the ABs. And yes, he absolutely could. He sits at 80 AB right now, so he needs just 50 more, in 16 games. That's doable, but it will be close. I would guess we'll sit him a couple more times and he'll come up just short.

I find it odd they use ABs and not PAs to determine rookie eligibility.

Batting 8th and walking as much as he does, Swanson is averaging a hair under 3.5 ABs per game. At that rate, it should take him at least 14 games to get 50 more ABs. Considering how often he sits and how often he gets hit in the nuts by errant throws, I doubt he reaches 130 ABs with only 16 team games remaining.

I would be schocked if the Braves let him lose rookie eligibility. Batting him 8th and sitting him so often is probably done partially because of rookie status considerations.

It's because when these regulations were created they didn't put OBP on the scoreboard

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't care how productive he has been, he's not ready. We're stunting his growth and setting the franchise back a decade by calling him up for some meaningless September games.

It's just an unnecessary gamble that even if works out doesn't accomplish a thing outside of short term gratification for the few fans (us) who are still paying attention to a horrid season.

As long as you don't spout things about "setting the franchise back a decade" and other pearls, such as "Walt Weiss wannabe."

Not sure if you are suggesting that I have. But that is not correct.

If Walt Weiss is Swanson's floor, then we don't really have much to complain about.

Swanson is college hitter that's in his second season of proball. It's a different situation than calling up someone at 19 like Andruw. The odds of this stunting his development are very very small. He's at an age where he needs to learn how to hit MLBers. He's not going to do that at AA.

No guarantee it would have happened under us. Just a freak accident. Kid was raking before the injury.
