I love Martin, but that's more than I personally would've wanted to pay him given our current roster composition heading into next season.
If the Dodgers don't extend Turner or we can't land Longoria for a decent offer (guys with more pop), I'd just as soon begin 2017 with a Garcia/Ruiz platoon. While that platoon or Dansby might not QUITE be as good in the 2-hole as Prado (and Dansby may well be), I'd just as soon they spend that money on a rotation piece.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...
Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

Good move by the Marlins.

I think Martin is worth that amount based on what he brings to the field and to the clubhouse.
Get off my lawn!
There's little doubt that he's the leader in that clubhouse. I thought it was telling he was the guy who sat at the table during the press conference.
I'm wondering if he and his agent had this contract offer on the table and with the Fernandez tragedy, the Marlins decided that they needed to pony up, so he can help keep that team together next year.
A 3/40 deal means the Marlins would have certainly given him a QO and he would have cost a draft pick to sign (under the current CBA). Since that's the case it looks like Prado was never really a legitimate option for the Braves.
With Freese and Prado extended, and guys like Desmond and Turner likely to be given a QO, the 3B market for the Braves is looking pretty bleak. If a trade can't be worked out for a guy with 4+ years of control, then the prudent course of action might end up being a Ruiz/Garcia platoon. Certainly not ideal, but that platoon might be able to scrape together 1-2 WAR combined.
Good for Nitram, he deserves it.
Why do people insist on misspelling "extent"?
Kudos to Prado, he really deserves it. He's been a pretty damn consistent player his entire career. Good defense and .293/.342/.423. That is a bit more than what I would pay, but if he can put up 2.75, 2.5, 2.5 WAR then he's at ~ 8 WAR and its worth it.
A player I was completely wrong about based on his minor league career.

A little rich for my blood (and I am a big Prado fan). He's a solid player though and does a lot of the little things that help a team.

Strasburg, Cervelli, Freese, and Prado all extended this year when they're set to hit free agency. Ivan Nova might be as well.
Something to keep in mind for those who are banking on the big free agent class of the ages after the 2018 season.
