Coppy keeps saying we're getting 2-3 SP

Are there 2 SP FA that anyone wants?

I can't see two guys that I really want. Certainly not on a contract of more than 2 years....

I know we could get some via trade, but I'm just looking at FA here.

The more I think about it, the more I could see signing Cashner to a 1-year "show me" deal. Maybe 1 year for ~$12-14M.

If we are getting 3.... one of them is almost certainly coming via trade and another is likely to be a back of the rotation veteran that knows how to pitch and can eat innings.

But how long would you wanna sign him for? I don't really want any pitcher on more than a 2-year deal.

I would be very surprised if we made any kind of trade beyond something on a lower level. I think we'll sign a couple SP and neither one for more than 2 years.

I think we'll trade for one and sign one. We could also trade for two. We definitely won't sign two. There's not enough talent out there for that.

Ervin Santana and Ivan Nova would be my two preferences as of now pending costs

I think you have to not think TOR guys when Coppy is talking. How many SP did wee sign last year? Does Jhoulys Chacin and Bud Norris ring a bell. Last year we signed 2 SP for opening day.

Now I think this year will be more targeting on winning / competing but a Bartolo Colon and Ervin Santana could easily be the two he is thinking. Both MOR type guys.

I expect whomever they acquire will:

    1. Be a reliable source of 180+ innings (so no Rich Hill or other unstable guys)
    2. Not cost them a draft pick
    3. Not require any talent of any significance to acquire, unless
    4. That significant talent is Mallex or Inciarte, and if it's Inciarte it could be a rather significant pitcher...think Julio level value

Putting those restraints on the targets, I would think James Shields is a definite possibility for the same reason Kemp and Mac are/were targets. Shields is an overpriced "name" player who should come for virtually zero prospect value in exchange, and he is a near lock to provide 180+ innings for the young rotation. He is also somewhat of a bounce back candidate, just like Kemp was. He will be gone in 2 years.

Chris Sale at all a possibility? Chris Archer maybe, or would TB not want to sell low (wow, he was 9-19, didn't realize, but had 233 SO in 201 IP, could be good for bounce-back season under McDowell)?

    I would also add in

    5. Tradeable if young players actually step up.

For possible trades I'd thinkl any of these guys could be had and could be on the radar.

    Ervin Santana
    Alex Cobb
    Drew Smyly
    Jake Odorizzi
    Josh Tomlin
    Jaime Garcia
Ian Kennedy (a lot of money)
    Dallas Keuchel

Doug Fister and Andrew Cashner immediately come to mind as decent FA options who should come relatively cheap and on short term deals. Jeremy Hellickson would be my preference among all FA options, but as the best starting pitching option in a very shallow class, he'll likely command a QO, as well as require a 4 year deal in the 60 million dollar range (possibly more).

Danny Duffy or Jason Vargas could slide in to the middle of the rotation if the Royals are serious about shedding payroll and cannot shed Kennedy's contract.

I bet he's planning to make a splash and trade for an Archer type, then add someone like Santana.

Teheran, Archer, Santana, Folty, Wisler. That's SOLID.

The cost to get both Archer and Ervin would be a pretty big hit on our depth (I would imagine). I am not sure we have all the pieces to make a move like that now. The talent in the lower minors is so vitally important to sustaining long term success that I am not sure I am ready to cash in that for 'our shot' now.

I think you guys need to back way off any talk of guys like this. I don't see any way we go after that type in a trade, so I think you're bound to be disappointed if you're expecting it.

I think Archer would be significant, but I'm not so sure Ervin would be insane. You're right though, it's all based on the asking price.

I am just as excited as the next Braves fan for this rebuild to be over... I just don't want to sell long term success for short term success. I know we have to unload some of the talent stored.. but not sure this off season is the right time. I want to compete without touching our Rome and lower talent. That is what we will use to build a decade + of success.. if that means WC berths and/or near misses for the next two years.. so be it.

It's so hard to say for Archer in particular. He's signed cheap for 5 years. If they want Allard/Albies/ and Acuna then no. If they really like Jace and Mallex one or two of Blair/Wisler/Gant with Soroka and whatever RP they want then sure
