2012 Draft Braves Top 10 Picks

Getting geared up for the season, wanted to look back at the recent Braves drafts and see who's still in line to make an impact on the club.

Starting with the top-10 picks in the 2012 draft.

    Overall Selection
    #21 Lucas Sims RHP
Starter or reliever - this is a make or break year for Sims to answer that question.

    #85 Alex Wood LHP
    No longer with the club

#116 Bryan De La Rosa C
No longer with the club - career .195 hitter in the minors.

    #149 Justin Black OF
Toolsy HS OF... no longer with the club, career .196 hitter.

    #179 Blake Brown OF
No longer with the club, career .223 hitter.

    #209 Josh Elander C
No longer with the club, did have a couple good years in the minors though.

    # 239 David Starn LHP
No longer with the club, pitched one year for Atlanta to the tune of a 5.50 ERA with a 1.66 WHIP.

    #329 Mike Dodig 1B/3B
No longer with the club, career .206 hitter with 3 homers in 350 ABs. Super creepy mustache too.

There it is, the top 10 selections of t he 2012 MLB draft for the Braves.... holy hell what a an ugly group. Its not just that most of these guys didn't pan out at the MLB level, most were awful in the minors as well. Certainly Alex Wood was a success at #85 and Sims can still carve out a useful role, but they might as well have just not picked after Alex Wood.

To be fair, look at the guys drafted after Sims in the 22-60 range. The only MLB players I see at first glance are Stroman and Piscotty.

Lewis Brinson would have been nice to have in the system right now though.

I hear you, most guys drafted bust; its just the nature of the beast. I think its probably unusual to see such bad performances from so many guys though.

If Sims carves out a role, and the draft produces Alex Wood and Lucas Sims as viable (in some role) major league pitchers, that's not a bad haul in reality, especially when your only picks in the top-100 are at #21/#85.

This is an especially bad class. As you mentioned, it's less about the major league value and more the fact that I don't think any of the guys drafted after Wood even made it to AA. That is bad.
