So will the dems sue trump to stop his EOs on unemployment payments, student loans, evictions, and payroll holiday? Seems the dems gave Trump a huge bone on this... trump's orders would help a ton of people, and if the dems try to stop them. they'll look horrible.

Unemployment insurance is administered by states. But regulated by federal law. States cannot pay unemployment benefits that are not authorized by law.

Law. As in passed by the Congress and signed into law by the president. The executive order is a sham.

What about the others? I just read it was 4 EOs.

Regardless, this was good for Trump politically. He comes across as caring whether that's true or not.

i don't know about the others

but this will be sorted out...there is always a lot of wrangling, brinksmanship and huffing and puffing before these deals are done...what we are seeing is the usual kabuki theater...something will pass Congress and be signed into law by end of August

President Trump pledged on Saturday to pursue a permanent cut to the payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare if he wins reelection in November, a hard-to-accomplish political gambit that some experts see as a major headache for the future of the country’s entitlement programs.

Trump unexpectedly promised the policy action as he signed a directive that aims to help cash-starved Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic. The order allows workers to postpone their payroll tax payments into next year but doesn’t absolve their bills outright — though the president said he would seek to waive what people owe if he prevails on Election Day.

“If I’m victorious on November 3rd, I plan to forgive these taxes and make permanent cuts to the payroll tax,” Trump said at a news conference in Bedminster, N.J. “I’m going to make them all permanent.”

Everyone loves an executive action when they agree with the action. Too many don't stop and consider the precedent. Hopefully there is a challenge to and a victory against Trump's actions from this weekend.

Nothing warms my heart quite like a payroll tax cut, but this EO is a total farce.

Who steps up and becomes the one that says I'm blocking the help for many Americans? Only way I see it not going thru is this makes congress get it done. Either way, I think Trump scored politically yesterday.

Our constitutional system was motivated by a fear of power. Hence the system of checks and balances. These overreaching EO's represent an ongoing effort (across multiple adminstrations) to expand executive power. But Americans in their bones still do not like the idea of government power, whether in the executive or some other branch.

    Was DACA an overreach also?

I don't think DACA passes constitutional muster. And it is pretty clear the courts view it that way. The distinction lies between administrative discretion (which any administration has plenty of) and changes to policy established by law. I think the executive order on delaying collection of payroll taxes for a few months might make it on grounds it is within administrative discretion. But the one on unemployment benefits clearly encroaches on Congress' power of the purse.
