    That's sad.
That is sad, indeed. My grandfather was also an early adopter of solar energy.

He was also an early adopter of fuel-efficient vehicles. And radial tires. And seat belts. He imported European cars in the 60s before seat belts were mandated in the US and was driving Japanese econoboxes before the US market knew what they were.

There's a lesson somewhere herein about price signals and the public sector's power to affect externalities.

That is correct. But you seem to claim to be on every side of every issue so I'm certain you think you are there

Why is everyone pissed about solar panels but not washing machines, when basically everyone owns washing machines?

I don't know if everyone's pissed about solar panels or not, but I do think, broadly speaking, that big picture questions about how we generate the energy to run our household appliances are more important than the appliances themselves.

The washing machine market is already both mature and competitive, with no major innovations expected in the near future. Solar is exploding, still has room for revolutionary innovation, and has a minimal manufacturing base in the US. It also accounts for only a small environmental positive due to it's current manufacturing process. There's plenty more both to lose and gain with the solar tariff.

(Disclaimer that I generally support tariffs designed to strengthen our manufacturing base.)

Both bolded parts of my were discussing imported panels:

the solar cell tariff only kicks in after 2.5 gigawatts worth hit U.S. shores each year.

Only 500 MW worth of solar cells were imported into the United States in total last year,

Let's just hope that American solar panels don't suck as much as American washing machines.

    Yes.
Our family has gone dryer less. Erected a cloths line then use it.
I forgot how good my cloths smell after hanging in the South Georgia air and remembered the Zen practice of clothpinning shirts, socks& drawers.

I anticipated a benefit from the new tax bill.
But a'll I get is a cup of Starbucks
