Trump needs to win the China trade war, period. In the long term it would be a enormous boost to at least even the odds there. Short term pain, long term gain.

Yeah it's called our political environment where we are slaves to letters over principles.

57 mocked Amash for standing up and leaving.

I don't remember dems calling out Obama when he assassinated a US citizen, or set deportation records

Only critical thinkers seem to be healthy these days

I don't think Trump has the ability to win the China trade war, but I agree with you that it is in the long term interest of the US to do so. The problem is that I don't think the populace is up to it any more than most of the leaders are in that any type of sacrifice is viewed as the coming of the end of the world.

I think pulling out of the TPP was a mistake because that set up a face-to-face with China when we could have worked with other economies within China's sphere-of-influence to bargain from a somewhat stronger position. The big problem is that Chinese leadership doesn't give two hoots about most of their population and they will play the longest of long games. Trump's inability to see past the latest poll numbers really blunts his ability to get much of anything done.

Can you elaborate on how China could have been addressed without short term pain?

Americans are stupid. They would rather sell the countries future for cheap china crap while they extend their communist reach around the world and steal all of our technology. This is a failure of capitalism. They don't understand value other than monetary. Societal value needs to be considered.

In addition, half the country can't put aside their hate for Trump and the right to realize that we need to be unified in this fight against China for the betterment of Western Civilization.

I'm actually in support on his confrontation with China but it seems like he could play good cop and let trade advisors in back rooms be bad cop, creating a much better and stabler situation.

Every single issue brings rage and ludicrous comments from the Oval Office. It's not a good recipe for leadership.
As usual, Runnin comes in with a refreshing and sane take from a left of center point of view.

Maybe it's because I still think of myself as a Blue Dog, but I remember a time when most Democrats supported protectionism for blue collar workers. Trump is a horrible messenger, but I like the message.

My fear is that his domestic opponents will oppose him on this issue reflexively, even though his position here lined up with that of most Democrats of ~2000. And I worry that his successor will decide that ditching this fight is an easy way to contrast with Trump and make short term political hay.

This is an area where Emperor-For-Life Xi has a huge advantage due to our short election cycle.

Trump has always been a horrible messenger but he approach is the only way to break through the propaganda machine. Every single candidate for the Republicans would have got demolished by HRC. They care too much about people that will never vote for them to win a national election.

This fight with China is long overdue and aside from an all out military assault there was no other way to proceed. China is a bad actor and as such you are left with limited options.

Gordon Chang has recently made the point though that the risk to Trump is to lose an election. The risk to Xi could be that he is murdered since the inherent nature of the Chinese government is corrupt and if you believe the reporting from various sources that th people are suffering as much as they are then this could be a potential outcome.

I really don't like this take, and I don't like the way Trump behaves. Then I realize that the best Republican candidate since Reagan got thrashed in 2012, and this loudmouth won in 2016, and I have a hard time arguing against it.

We are the on the precipitous of a tectonic shift in how America functions. The very core values that this nation was founded on is being attacked. Our only defense at this time is Trump and I will gladly accept his buffoonery is it means the preservation of America.

Pretending that his mannerisms and words actually impact every day peoples lives is laughable. But, policies implemented by the radical communist left will destroy the nation and truly inflict pain.

That is what we are fighting against. That is why we need to rally to Trump because with another 4 years there can be some real progress made and turn back the advance of the radical progressive left.

Remember how Fox News went ballistic every time Obama crossed his legs wrong? Those were the good ol' days.
