Top 50 Prospects: No. 49, SCOTT THORMAN

    ATLANTA BRAVES TOP 50 PROSPECTS

    No. 49: SCOTT THORMAN

The man: a 6-foot-5, 200-pound, lefty hitting first baseman was the Braves' first-round pick (30th overall) in June of 2000. Despite losing his dad and his coach to cancer at the age of 12, he became one of the highest paid players to ever sign out of Canada with a bonus of $2.225 million.

The prospect: shoulder surgery wiped out what should have been his first full season in 2001, but he emerged intact the following season with a .294 average and 16 homers for the Rome Braves. In 2005, he began putting his power stroke together with a .294 average and finished with 21 homers. Midway through the following season, he had 15 homers at Richmond to earn his debut callup on June 18.
But the dream was dwarfed by the reality as Thorman's first two weeks had him overmatch to the tune of .111 with one RBI. But July was much more to his liking as he homered four times in the month, but he'd have only one more over the season's final two months.

Named the Braves' Opening Day first baseman, the game hung with him for the first half of the season, Thorman picking up nine homers but only 32 RBIs and a .217 average. While he remained with the Braves through the 2007 season (playing in 120 games), when Mark Teixeira arrived, Thorman started exactly one game -- the final game of the season, relegated otherwise to pinch-hitting.

With Teixeira returning, Thorman was bumped to the minors, and when Casey Kotchman was acquired for Teixeira, it meant that in the minors he'd remain. Year after year after year – Thorman would punish Triple-A pitching and await for the call that never came. He finally left the Atlanta organization in 2008, despite another 19-homer season, signing with the Rangers as a free agent. The Royals, Rangers and Tigers all kept him under contract for multiple seasons, and he kept pounding homers until his retirement in 2012.

In 2008, he took a side trip to represent Canada in the Olympics. He retired with 154 minor league home runs, then jumped right into managing. In just his second season coaching in the minors, the Royals appointed him skipper of the short-season Burlington club in 2015. Wednesday, January 11, 2017, he was named manager of the full-season Lexington team in the South Atlantic League.

I was so sure he would eventually work things out. I didn't want Tex for that reason.
    Boy I was wrong.
