Braves trade Mallex and Simmons to M's for Gohara and Burrows

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/0...e-simmons.html

They turned one of their only expendable position assets into even more pitching. Gohara probably slots into the Braves list at about 10-15, and Burrows is a BP guy all the way.

Seems light for Mallex and Simmons. I suppose I dramatically overestimated Mallex's trade value.

I think the M's got a steal in this one.

Fangraphs has Gohara as a future bullpen guy. Not sure how I feel about that.

I assumed that unless Mallex developed some pop there was no chance we'd see him in the same outfield as Ender. Interesting move. Time will tell, I guess.

    Mis-management of assets probably.

I'd assume we'd have been much better off by trading Ender.

Mallex + Return for Ender >>>>>>> Ender + Return for Mallex

Not necessarily. As pure and simple assets, maybe. But in terms of fielding the best team, if we assume Mallex is roughly a 2ish WAR guy (don't know how you could assume more yet), then Ender is a clear and impactful upgrade from him at CF. So the pieces you got in return for Ender would have to be that much better than the guys they're replacing. So even if you could get three 3-WAR guys for Ender, that doesn't automatically mean you're better off than you would have been getting a much lesser return for Mallex and keeping Ender.

That said, I don't think this was a good trade.

To be fair, the report that had him as a bullpen guy was Farnsworth, who had Gant as our second best prospect last year.

Now reports suggest they will flip Mallex to the Rays for pitching. This board would have a melt down if the Ms used Mallex to get a starting pitcher from the Rays haha!!

Well we probably unloaded Simbrel because of potential injury again.

Does Gohara have an injury history? Not sure why we unloaded Mallex for this.

LHP that can hit 100 and could still potentially start don't grow on trees. I like this deal for the same reason I liked the Alex Jackson deal, and that's because the upside is immense. It's risky, but we've built a level of depth that allows us to take on those risks.

    From Baseball America:

The Mariners signed Gohara on Aug. 14, 2012. Seattle had followed the Brazilian closely for two years and signed him about two weeks after his 16th birthday. Most international free agents who turn pro at age 16 subsequently lose Rule 5 exemption for the first time at age 20. (But a loophole involving a collapsing winter league meant he was not eligible this year, but will be in 2017.)

In Gohara’s case, not only is he a “young” 20-year-old, but he also is an inexperienced one. He began each of the past four seasons in extended spring training, and this year he made just 10 starts at low Class A Clinton. Those 10 starts are the extent of his experience in a full-season league.

At age 16, he was already 6-3, 220 and threw 94. Jeff Sullivan indicated at the time that he signed for $880,000.

Surely Coppy knew he could get Smyly in a simple package around Smith. All I can think is that the report of Coppy almost making a deal for Archer was true and centered around Smith and others. Tampa countered and said they'd give Smyly and Coppy said no but the Mariners still really wanted him and figured out how.

Hmm I dunno anything about the guys we got. Are they any good? Moderately surprised we'd trade Mallex away like that. I kinda figured he'd be a good replacement for Neck at some point.

Deal is basically Gohara for Mallex (Simmons and Burrows are pretty much a wash). The M's got themselves a 2-3 WAR CFer under control for 5 years by only giving up the equivalent of Kyle Muller.

Seems like a clear win for the M's. Bad trade by Coppy. He essentially gave an average CFer away for nothing.

But I thought the Braves were all about that WAR and surplus value projections. Please look into your crystal ball and tell me what the surplus value is of these players.

tells me that Coppy is thinking about keeping the farm restocked. is he about to move some pitching for something?? I don't like the trade initially.. I think Mallex has big upside to become a better player than Ender.
