Adding Burrows in the mix we have quite a list of lefty releivers who should be ready between 2017 and 2018.

Minter, Biddle, Paco, Lindgren, Harrington, Burrows, Clouse,

Especially when you are referring to the salary difference of 2-6 million
Could be that they aren't stupid enough to give a long term contract to a backup level catcher at starting dollars that compensated him for every bit of his "pitch framing" ability.

Signing Castro only made sense if he was a bargain. He wasn't.

Impressive amount of assets that could provide huge dividends in one facet or another

The past couple of years we've seen the value of lefty relievers. They bring back a lot on trade and cost a ton on the open market. It's a good asset to hoard.

For all that, I'm not sure I like the trade.

I am on fence right now. Initially. Nope. Digesting it a bit right now. I hate what Seattle gave up for drew. I wonder if Tampa will flip Mallex too.

After having a chance to read more on the return, I'm feeling better about this trade. Seems like Gohara is making progress on a changeup. In the BA chat from December, Kyle Glasser speculated he'd be on the edge of being a top 100 prospect. Still a lot of risk here, but he seems to be a better prospect than I was initially thinking. John Manuel and Dave Cameron seem to like the trade for the Braves. Keith Law had Gohara as the Mariners #2 prospect (just behind Kyle Lewis, I assume).

Yeah BA and BP both have him at #3 going into the season. Will be interested to see where he ends up in an updated Braves list. If he's borderline top 100 he would slip into the back end of the top 10 on the Braves.

I know you are trying to be funny. But Steamer, and I'm guessing Dave Cameron, just don't believe in Smith to be anything but a 4th OFer. Certainly not the 2 WAR CF that ensheff, and I'm presuming you too, think that he is/could be. If Smith had proven to be a 2 WAR already then he would bring a lot more back.

I'm upset we traded Mallex. I just hate the arrogance and belittling.

So you respond in-kind? If your evaluation of Mallex is a starting caliber CF then we blew this trade. If he's a 4th OF then it's pretty even. I would hope the Braves viewed him as a 4th OF and are not just moving him because he's blocked in center.

Again, I'd rather have Mallex but I don't think your statement is true. If the braves think this kid is a tier 1 arm then why not get him before he truly breaks out? Haven't we seen how valueable pitching has become?

I just don't see the mallex you guys do. He's really fast. He got a lot better on d last year but he's no natural out there. Arm is weak. His defensive value and bat value is almost all speed. Speed is the first thing to go with injury and age.

He is fast but not a great base steal guy in mlb

I don't see the hitting upside.

Maybe he gets u 2 war in cf based all on defense.

why can't lien or didder be as good as mallex in a year?

Mallex doesn't fit on this team. You don't just dump him. But I don't think mallex is a top 3 piece for a trade of anyone of consequence

That's certainly possible. But considering Mallex + was traded for Smyly (who we have a good idea of his value) then it starts to become clear what Mallex's value currently is around the league.

Just read multiple reports on these prospects

Sounds like we got a lefty touki and a left hand reliever who could be ready as early as this year while opening up 40 man space.

I honestly think we will be looking at this kid as the third piece of a deal for archer.

If not we have 40 man room to sign a vet who will sign cheap and potentially flip.

The industry writers seem to all think mallex is not a starter. Just this board seems to have that opinion

That evalulation was clear when they extended Ender.

I don't think so. It was a poo poo platter. And most think the Rays screwed up.

Everything I've read says mlb thinks mallex is a platoon guy
