Basketball coaching hopeful was denied a job. She says it’s because she’s no longer gay.
Camille LeNoir thought she’d landed a dream job last year, an entryway into the competitive world of coaching college basketball.

She was a former player herself, having starred at the University of Southern California. The WNBA’s Washington Mystics made her a second-round draft pick and she played the game professionally overseas. But since her playing days ended, LeNoir had focused on working with young players. She was excited when her former college coach offered her an assistant position on his staff at New Mexico State University.

She accepted the job, but two days before she was to board a plane for New Mexico, LeNoir’s phone rang. The Aggies’ coach, Mark Trakh, had watched an online video posted in 2011 in which LeNoir discussed her playing career, her religious faith and her sexuality.

For most of her basketball career, LeNoir identified as gay. Now she’s not. In fact, in the video, she said homosexuality was “wrong” and “not worth losing your soul over.”

Trakh retracted the job offer, LeNoir said, and advised her to remove the video if she ever wanted to work in college basketball. LeNoir said she was devastated. She felt she could be an effective coach regardless of what she’d said in that video. And besides, LeNoir figured, hadn’t she already accepted the position?

“I felt the job was taken away because of my heterosexuality,” LeNoir, 31, said in a recent interview.

LeNoir is suing New Mexico State in U.S. District Court, saying she was discriminated against because of her religious beliefs and sexual identity. New Mexico State acknowledges in court filings that Trakh rescinded the offer but denies any discrimination charges. A federal judge in California allowed the lawsuit to move forward and will preside over a unique case that spans sport, religion and sexuality, and provides a small window into the culture surrounding women’s basketball.

In court filings, New Mexico State says that LeNoir’s feelings about homosexuality shared in the video “would have had an adverse impact” on her “ability to effectively coach and recruit players who identify as LGBT.”

Bull...you generalize white people and make the assertion that their thoughts can not be as genuine as non whites. If that doesn't prove the claim than nothing will. Same thought/ different race / different analysis.

But I'm sure you'll wordsmith this into something else considering youre amazing with language. You try to dodge your initial remark when sturg rightfully called you out.

This is precisely what I mean, and precisely why it is useless to communicate with you. Every post is just feeding more pearls for your clutching.

You didn't say that a white persons thought in this scenario wouldn't be genuine?

You wanna bet that even though JP talks about competition and cream-to-the-top, if the results of both of those were white men on top, JP would change the rules of the game.

Do you see the word "genuine" anywhere in that post? I'm not even sure why you're focused on that term, specifically—something can sound self-interested and/or selfish and not be disingenuous. I wasn't suggesting that white men who complain about a lack of white male voices in contemporary society weren't being "genuine", just deluded and selfish.

As an addendum: your lecturing anyone on the perils of "generalizing" regarding groups of people is farcical.

    Another non-reader.

I mentioned "competition" and "cream-to-the-top" explicitly to put the discussion in sturg's terms. I'm a socialist; I don't hang my hat on those things.

There is that wordsmithing I knew was on the way. Fine - the genuine aspect was offbase. Lets now come at the idea of treating people equally which was the initial point that I countered when you called me a joke.

You said the following: If a white guy said it, it would sound woefully self-interested and/or selfish

Therefore, a white person said something and you have determined that just from the fact of being white it takes on the appearance of a negative trait (self-interested / selfish). The only reason this is the case is because they are white. If you were blindfolded and 10 people said the same thing it would all sound the same. Your only differentiating factor here is skin color. Therefore, you are not treating white people equally.

The fliers feature a picture of Uncle Sam and the words, “Don’t apologize for being white.” They were found on a kiosk near the rally.

It's silly if the guy didn't mean anything and they crack down but I'm white. Always have been and never needed a sign to tell me it was OK to be white.

There's a pretty well documented history of whites being violent toward minorities in our history so it would at least be worth looking into. I'm not saying there's certainly any malice for that guy but why sneak around and post the signs?

It was started by the 4chan to cause a SJW meltdown so mainstream people can understand what sort of crazy people they are.

Now y'all know where I stand on the systemic racism in this country but there is racism and discrimination against white people. What really pissed me off about this white privilege is that it assumes everyone white has an easy life. That's racist to begin with. I want to middle school as 1 of 4 white kids. I faced racism from students as well as teachers. I was suspended over 15 times for fights where I defended myself from people who attacked me. The only reason I wasn't expelled was because the principal openly admitted black students were attempting to bully me because I was white.

I always call myself cajun instead of white but white is the only race it's considered racist to have any pride in. Black power. Okay great. Latino pride. Sure. It's okay to be white. GET THE PITCHFORKS!

I hope the lefties are proud... these are the big issues. Making sure police investing a flier saying it's OK to be a certain race

(of course, I'm sure I'll get lectured about how selfish it is for me to say that)

    Draymond:

"For starters, let's stop using the word owner and maybe use the word Chairman," Green wrote. "To be owned by someone just sets a bad precedent to start. It sets the wrong tone. It gives one the wrong mindset."

    Cuban:

"For him to try to turn it into something it's not is wrong," Cuban told ESPN. "He owes the NBA an apology. I think he does, because to try to create some connotation that owning equity in a company that you busted your ass for is the equivalent of ownership in terms of people, that's just wrong. That's just wrong in every which way.

"People who read that message and misinterpret it -- make it seem like we don't do everything possible to help our players succeed and don't care about their families and don't care about their lives, like hopefully we do for all of our employees -- that's just wrong."

"We own equity; we don't own people," Cuban said. "And there's a big difference. This is a country where we have corporations, and you put up your money and buy equity. E-Q-U-I-T-Y. It translates into shares of stock. People who bust their ass and work hard and get a little bit lucky have enough money to buy enough shares of stock to buy a company.

"To try to turn it into something that it's not is ridiculous. Draymond can trash-talk on the court, but when he comes into our world, it doesn't fly. ... I guess it's because he went to Michigan State and didn't take any business classes, but you own equity. When you own a team, you own equity, shares of stock. That's called ownership. Tell him if he wants to take classes at Indiana's business school, I'll even pay for his classes and we'll help him learn that stuff."
