    February 24th:

    1966: The Braves sign USC pitcher Tom Seaver. However, the deal would be later voided and the Mets would select Seaver in a special draft.

    1986: Dick Williams resigns as Padres manager. Weeks earlier. Team executives tried to buy out his contract before owner Joan Kroc stopped them.

    2003: After the death of Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler, Commissioner Bud Selig bans the use of ephedra in the minors.

    February 25th:

    1933: Tom Yawkey purchases the Red Sox from Robert Quinn for $1.2 million.

    1934: Hall of Fame manager John McGraw dies at age 60.

    1940: Hall of Famer Ron Santo is born in Seattle, Washington.

    1972: The Cardinals trade Steve Carlton to the Phillies for Rick Wise.

    1973: The players and owners agree to a new three year CBA, ending the lockout. The new agreement establishes salary arbitration for players with two or more years ML service, raises the minimum salary to $15,000, and a new "10-5" trade rule, which gives players with ten years service in the majors and last five with the same team the right to veto a trade.

    1987: Former Cy Young winner LaMarr Hoyt is banned for a year by Commissioner Uberroth for multiple drug related incidents. The suspension would be later reduced to 60 games.

    1994: The Veterans Committe elects Phil Rizzuto to the Hall of Fame.

    2002: At age 84, Hall of Fame Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell announces the upcoming season will be his last.

    2008: Terry Francona signs a three year extension as Red Sox manager.

    1935: The Yankees grant Babe Ruth his release.

    1943: The Phillies name Bucky Harris manager.

    1952: Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe is sworn into the Army to serve in The Korean War. He would miss the next two seasons.

    1957: The Giants trade Hoyt Wilhelm to the Cardinals for Whitey Lockman.

    1991: The Veterans Committee elects Bill Veeck into the Hall of Fame.

    1992: Red Sox owner Jean Yawkey dies at age 83. Her interest in the team is placed into a trust in her name and led by team CEO John Harrington.

    February 28th:

    1903: Pittsburgh owners Barney Dreyfuss and James Potter lead a syndicate that buys the Phillies for $170,000.

    1966: Don Drysdalevand Sandy Koufax begin their joint holdout from Dodgers Spring Training. They were asking for a three year contract worth $1 million to be divided evenly between them. At $167,000 for the two per season, they would have been the highest paid players in the game.

    1986: Commissioner Peter Uberroth suspends Joaquin Andujar, Dale Berra, Enos Cabell, Keith Hernandez, Jeffrey Leonard, Lonnie Smith, and Dave Parker a full season for their "pattern of drug use". "The Cocaine Seven", as they were called, were allowed to play if they agreed to donate ten percent of their salary to drug related community service in the city they played, submit to random drug tests, and 100 hours of community service.

    1989: The Veterans Committee elects Red Schoendienst to the Hall of Fame.

    2000: Commissioner Bud Selig suspends Darryl Strawberry one year due to a positive test for cocaine.

    2005: The Padres and Jake Peavy agree to a four year deal.
