100%. Thre simplification of the issue to just being about race is why we can't make any progress.

Since some of you harbor some doubts as to whether police treat blacks differently, here is an article (a bit dated) that discusses some of the research.

    https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2016...ce-racial-bias

There are measurable differences in even how police talk to blacks and whites. How likely they are to use words of respect like Sir and Ma'am.

I personally believe the treatment is different but there are reasons for that treatment whether or not some feel its justified.

But in terms of 'gunning black men down in the streets' that narrative just isn't true when you look at the data.

No the data do not show police gunning black men down in the streets. That's true.

What they show is differences in how they speak to blacks, differences in how likely they are to cuff blacks, push them against a wall, pull out their gun on them, use a taser on them, push them to the ground, use pepper spray on them, hit them with their baton.

I'm under no illusion that everybody is treated equitably.

Our police system is ****ed up. As is our education system. There are answers to solve this but nobody wants to

I hate to go with an anecdote. But I was pulled over while driving to a client once. Since it was a long drive I used my wife's car, which is much nicer and reliable than mine. And I was wearing a tie.

This is not the only time I've been pulled over. But I was shocked at how nice the cop was. First he commented on the car. Then he asked me where I was going since I had out of state license plates. I told him I was late for a meeting and he offered directions on how to get there.

This has nothing to do with race. I've been pulled over a couple other times. Not dressed as well. Driving a beat-up old car. Boy did the tie and car make a difference. It was simply stunning. But that's just one data point. Maybe it was just a nice cop. But I don't think so. Cops are humans. No more or less than the rest of us. With all our prejudices and weaknesses.

Oh and he didn't give me a ticket.

Again...there are statistics which show higher percentage of blacks committ all sorts of crime. Are the police being racist or following statistics?

I've literally never had a positive interaction with a cop. They have always been jerks to me and never have let me go without a ticket

I do think if they were simply trained to use Sir and Ma'am with everyone, even punks, it would be a move forward.

All of my interactions have been bad, except the one I described.

well...these studies try to control for that and other variables such as age, situation, race of cop and so forth...everything else being equal a black man is more likely to be cuffed or tased...we all know this...and the data bear it out

so yeah they aren't being gunned down for no reason, but they have plenty of reasons to identify with what happened to George Floyd...and to be afraid of what the police might do to them

The solution is not difficult but will take two generations to show promise.

End illegal immigration and bring manufacturing jobs back to America. End expansive welfare.

What this does will bring the father back into the household.

My interactions have been a mixed bag, but mostly OK. The best were when I was pulled over with my grandfather (retired NYPD) in the passenger seat and once when my girlfriend was driving. Shocker...it helps to be an ex-cop or an attractive female when dealing with the police.

The ones that haven’t gone as well, if I’m being honest, I put more of the blame on myself. I was almost always in the wrong and the cops almost always were fine.

It’s a supreme injustice to police officers that local governments have empowered them to be glorified tax collectors. There’s not a person in this country that doesn’t grow up fearing the police.

Well, if you're going to keep your window cracked and keep shouting "am I being detained?" For 5 minutes, I can see why they have it out for you.

We need a national database of decertified police officers.

No more dangerous cops getting a new job two towns away.

My thoughts are they will be celebrated and welcomed with open arms to RW paramilitary groups

Who is ready to dismantle police unions so bad cops can be fired and prosecuted.

    Sturg33 is! Anybody else?
