There's too much expectation of protests to affect change. Protests don't cause change themselves. They open doors to present opportunities to affect change. You're not changing the system without engaging with the system.

General Mattis lets loose on Trump, supports protesters. This is snowballing.

Mattis makes a basic point: deal with the lawbreakers, but don't let them distract from the more important issue that people are protesting about.

I think there are people (including very poorly chosen one and Tom Cotton in his op-ed piece) who want to emphasize the first part. And that is getting things backwards.

The language about "dominating" the protestors shows how badly very poorly chosen one understands the situation. And the stunt with the bible is just a very deep self-inflicted wound.

I'm glad Mattis is also calling out Esper on this whole idea of dominating the battlespace:

“We must reject any thinking of our cities as a ‘battlespace’ that our uniformed military is called upon to ‘dominate.’ At home, we should use our military only when requested to do so, on very rare occasions, by state governors. Militarizing our response, as we witnessed in Washington, D.C., sets up a conflict—a false conflict—between the military and civilian society. It erodes the moral ground that ensures a trusted bond between men and women in uniform and the society they are sworn to protect, and of which they themselves are a part. Keeping public order rests with civilian state and local leaders who best understand their communities and are answerable to them."

He has the right to his beliefs. I'm not a big fan of people making a political statement on company time. But if you are going to wade into this at this moment in time, you need to have some awareness of what is at stake.

The lack of ability for people to accept that it's okay for others to have different beliefs and opinions never ceases to amaze me. And I apply this to Brees and those going after Brees.
