Yep. Reds really disliked Brandon Phillips, apparently.

Yea but given what the sports has been through recently, at least he has his life.

That price tag is quite, quite low. If it doesn't work out for any reason, they can just release him and not bat an eyelash.

So the lineup all of a sudden looks pretty good. Phillips can still provide value on offense.

Phillips has been a non factor on offense for a few years now. It was his defense until last year that made him an asset.

hello, got hoodwinked into coming back by ownership!

this deal is pretty meh, but with S-Rod out I reckon it's a low risk move. BP isn't much anymore, but if nothing else he can be a decent #6 hitter on a mediocre team and maybe his defense bounces back a little. But he's hardly even an avg player these days.

A non factor with a 730 OPS? I'm not trying to argue he is good but there is still value in his bat.

He's been below league average offensive player for 4 consecutive years

he had a 92 wRC+ last year (good for bottom 3rd of all 2b, and 8% below MLB avg) his base running has declined, defense has declined. ZIP and STEAMER both predict he will be a sub 1 fWAR player next year. Maybe he rebounds a wee bit and approaches 2. But I wouldn't bank on it.

and a .730 OPS is ok, but not when the OBP part of it is .325

SLG is more important IMO at his spot in the lineup.

Last year, only 0.9 but caused my an anomalous and uncharacteristic bad defensive year.

How has his offense been a non factor? Did you see his numbers after the break last year?
Last year he batted .291/.320/.416 with 11 home runs.... that's very valuable offensive numbers for a second baseman who is also a good defensive guy traditionally.

Not to mention he stole 23 and 14 bases last two years respectively

730 OPS in Cincy is not good. Jace was a better hitter last year. They got Phillips for the defensive upgrade.

Agreed. But below league average isn't necessarily a non-factor.

Aybar last year is an example of a non factor.

Look at his fWar from 2015 and tell me where he got his value from.

90, 88, 97, and 92 are his WRC+ numbers the last 4 years. In no world is that good or valuable.

You are getting caught up with semantics. If we wanted a below avg offensive player we would run Jace out there all year. But his defense sucks so they went for Phillips who is an upgrade there.

Jace was NOT a better hitter... 1.0 and 0.0 WAR last two seasons, can't hit lefties and only hit .254/.355/.385 on his STRONG side against righties
