    1908: Ty Cobb signs a $4,000 deal with the Tigers that also pays him an $800 bonus if he hits .300.

    1959: The Indians trade Larry Doby to the Tigers for Tito Francona.

    1966: The Astros and Dodgers play in an exhibition in the Astrodome, the first teams to play on artificial grass.

    1968: The new AL expansion franchise in Kansas City announces it will be known as the Royals.

    1978: The Padres fire manager Alvin Dark. Pitching coach Roger Craig takes over on an interim basis.

    1993: Indians pitchers Steve Olin and Tim Crews are killed when the boat they were in strikes a pier. Another Indians pitch, Bob Ojeda, is seriously injured, but would make a full recovery.

    2002: Dante Bichette announces his retirement.

    2010: Joe Mauer signs an eight year contract extension worth $184 million with the Twins.

    1951: The Dodgers sign a 21-year lease to play at an abandoned Naval base in Vero Beach, Florida for Spring Training. Vero Beach will be "DodgerTown" through 2008.

    2009: Ichiro Suzuki's two run single with two out in the bottom of the tenth helps Japan defeat South Korea 5-3 to win their second straight World Baseball Classic title.

    2009: Miami-Dade County officials sign the final documents to give the go-ahead for the building of a new ballpark to be built on the grounds of the former Orange Bowl.

    1961: The New York Senate approves $55 million in funding for a new ballpark in Queens that will be the future home of the Mets.

    2001: During a Diamondbacks exhibition games against the Giants, a fastball thrown by Randy Johnson strikes a bird which was flying in the path. The impact of the pitch appears to make the bird explode on contact.

    2008: The Twins and Joe Nathan agree to a four year deal worth $47 million.

    2008: In the earliest season opener in ML history, the Red Sox defeat the A's 6-5 in Tokyo, Japan.

    1967: Juan Marichal ends his holdout when he signs a deal with the Giants that makes him the third pitcher in ML history to make $100,000 in a season.

    1973: Twins pitcher Jim Perry becomes the first player to use the 10-5 rule, giving the OK for a trade to the Tigers.

    1973: The Braves release Denny McLain.

    1987: The Royals trade David Cone and minor leaguer Chris Jelic to the Mets for Ed Hearn, Rick Anderson, and prospect Mauro Gozzo.

    1989: Pete Rose's alleged gambling is exposed in Sports Illustrated. The report alleges Rose bet on games from Riverfront Stadium using hand gestures from an associate.

    1992: The Brewers trade Gary Sheffield to the Padres for Ricky Bones along with minor leaguers Jose Valentin and Matt Mieske.

    2002: The Marlins trade Matt Clement and Antonio Alfonseca to the Cubs for Julian Tavarez, Jose Cueto, Dontrelle Willis, and Ryan Jorgensen.

    2012: Dodgers owner Frank McCourt agrees to sell the team to a group that includes basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson and former baseball executive Stan Kasten for $2 billion, the highest ever for a sports team.

    2001: The Rockies sign Todd Helton to a nine year contract extension worth $141.5 million.

    2002: MLB announces there will be a minute of silence at 9:11 at each team's first night game in remembrance of the September 11th attacks the prior year.

    2008: In an exhibition game celebrating the team's 50th year on the West Coast, the Dodgers play the Red Sox in front of 115,300 fans at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

    2013: The Tigers and Justin Verlander agree to a seven year contract worth $180 million.

    2013: The Giants and Buster Posey agree to an eight year deal worth $159 million.

The ruling of the future Supreme Court judge ends the longest work stoppage in ML history at 232 days.

    2006: After a book detailing the alleged use of performance enhancing drugs by Barry Bonds, Commissioner Bud Selig appoints former senator George Mitchell to head an investigation into steroid use in baseball.

    2012: The Rockies announce Jamie Moyer will start the team's second game against the Astros, making the 49 year old the oldest starting pitcher to make a ML roster.
