What Does A Swanson Extension Look Like???

I mentioned something akin to a Longoria-like deal around the time he was called up last season, and think the just-signed Tim Anderson deal provides a pretty nice blueprint. I don't think that anyone doubts Dansby's the better player, and given his additional drawing power as the hometown kid, the brass would probably be wise to go a little further in having him as one of the faces of the franchise. Yes, he's still a bit "wet behind the ears" for a lot of people's tastes, but I don't think you miss the opportunity to lock him up now - if you can. Like Longoria, Swanson's floor is so high that you're still likely to receive pretty good value even in his down years, and the good seasons make you look like you're robbing him blind.

Anderson's deal was for 6 years and $25 million with two club options. Given the direction the dollars should be going with the new park opening, wouldn't now be the perfect time to offer something in the range of 7 years and $39.2 million with three club options?

    2017 - $950,000
    2018 - $1,200,000
    2019 - $1,800,000
    2020 - $4,500,000
    2021 - $7,750,000
    2022 - $10,000,000
    2023 - $13,000,000 (Age 29 season)

    2024 - $15,000,000 (Team Option - $2 million buyout)
    2025 - $17,000,000 (Team Option - $3 million buyout)
    2026 - $19,000,000 (Team Option - $3 million buyout)

If he bites, that gives you a great starting point to use when trying to lockdown Albies, Acuna, and Maitan in future seasons.
Has there EVER been a statement and question a certain someone should absolutely never have made and asked publicly more than...

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

I'd be ok with the club signing him to that sort of deal. I have some doubts Swanson would sign on the dotted line. But while favorable for the club it is not a crazily one sided deal. Has plausibility.

All he has to do is become a 2 win player to make it a good deal for the team. That's kind of where I'm at in projecting him. Obviously there is both upside and downside relative to that.

I think 2 WAR represents more like his realistic floor, at least at his peak. It's hard to envision him not becoming at least that valuable considering his defense, his speed, his contact ability, and his lack of weaknesses.

I like the extension in the OP. I'd be totally fine with that. I think we may wait until after this year, though.

Unsurprisingly, you are incorrectly comparing Anderson's contract to Swanson's situation. Anderson's total possible commitment to the ChiSox is through his age 31 season, not age 33 like the Swanson proposal. Players do not sell early FA seasons that preclude them from hitting the market again past the age of 30-31. Anderson was likely willing to sell his early-30s because he correctly identified himself as a higher risk, and took a little more guaranteed money NOW.

Understanding that, Swanson probably won't be extended until after this season, his age 23 season, at the very earliest. The longer the Braves wait, the less and less favorable the contract becomes for the team. So chop off the 2017 season, the 2025 and 2026 season. This will allow Swanson to hit the FA market after his age 30 season.

Something like a deal signed this coming off season around 5/25 guaranteed over his remaining years of club control (2018-2022, ages 24-28) plus 1-2 option FA years (his age 29-30 seasons) at $18M-$22M each is realistic. There is no point in extending him if the Braves don't gain control of his age 29 season. If the Braves can get an option on Swanson's age 30 season I would consider that a major victory.

If the Braves strike now, they might be able to get Swanson to agree to signing away 1-2 more years of early 30s, but that is extremely unlikely. Swanson already earned a few million bucks and carries about as little risk as any young player in the game. He, and his agent, would be wise to bank on that certainty and not sell away many of his prime FA earning years too cheaply.

Unsurprisingly, you're wasting time criticizing me rather than doing something constructive.

    A - U - S - T - I - N

    B - E - C - K

Google him before everybody on the board knows more about him than you.

About 10% of my post criticized you. The rest explained a more realistic extension for Swanson.
