Shanks says he would be really surprised if we took Lewis over Beck. Mentions we love Wright but likely won't be there.

The more I watch Beck's video, the more I'm not sure about him. His swing is so high effort.

Longenhagen has Beck as #7 on his board with this scouting report:

"A torn ACL kept Beck off of the showcase circuit last summer and teams have less information (both on paper and off) about him than ant of the other significant high school hitters because of it. Uncertainty has become apprehension as teams have watched Beck swing over top of breaking stuff this spring. But he has among the loudest tools in the entire draft including the class' best bat speed, plus raw power projection and a plus arm. If he hits he's a star, but the risk is high."

I do love Beck but I'd take Lewis over him if they were both there. It'll probably be Gore if he's there. They just can't not draft a pitcher if there's one there they like.

What makes this whole situation so interesting is seeing how many people do a complete 180 as the draft gets closer. Not necessarily you CJ9, but so many screamed their displeasure when Anderson was picked over Lewis last June because the Braves didn't take the toolsy hitter with questions now seem to be wary of selecting that exact same type of player at #5 instead of #3. If you're dead set on picking BPA or highest potential ceiling with the first pick, it's pretty obvious that guy is Beck.

To be honest, if he does hit, he sounds an awful lot like Benintendi with plus power.

I am dead set on Austin Beck. I will be really happy if we take him.

I keep going back and forth of Lewis and Beck. I think I prefer Beck but would be exhilarated with either. Would also be happy with Gore but am hoping for a bat. Wright would be out of this world but it's sounding more and more like he could be #1 and if not def top 3

If Beck is the pick AND he signs for underslot I'll be pretty damn excited.

I'll be pretty happy with most any of the projected top 10 or so picks. From what I've read, it seems after McKay, Wright, and Greene, there is a clear drop off to the next tier. As long as we don't draft a 1b I'll be happy. Preference is Beck or any of the aforementioned guys, but Gore, Lewis, Adell, or even Haseley would also be fine with me.

May be just me, but a Top 10 position prospects list that included Albies, Acuna, Maitan, Beck, Demeritte, Riley, Pache, Peterson, Jackson, and Cumberland is an awful lot to get excited about given our arms. God forbid anybody else in last year's international class works out or we happen to land another bat with significant upside in the June draft.

If the vets that were acquired for this season somehow start performing before the deadline, our system could easily be the scariest in some time. Just imagine what additional prospects in return for Johnson, Garcia, Big Sexy, Dat Dude, Markakis, Kemp, and potentially even Vizcaino would make our Top 30 look like.

Another interesting thought - let's say you can get Beck for $4.4 million. Does an offer of $3 million get Vientos to slide to us in the 2nd Round?

He seems like a guy that people with picks in front of us have also been linked to, so I wouldn't guess he'd make it to us.

If we go HS hitter at 5, I bet the target is Tristian Beck at 41. He's a draft-eligible sophomore who hasn't pitched since he's hurt, but there's no reason for him to sign for slot in the second round where he's probably going. He could go back and be a first rounder with another year at Stanford. Plus MLB.com and Eric Longenhagen at Fangraphs have both linked us to him.

Probably, but it likely wouldn't take that much. Vientiane has fallen quite a bit on boards and won't get close to $3 million if he goes where he's currently projected.

I would be ecstatic with a Beck Beck start to the draft. Tristan is an electric talent if healthy.

I can't think of 2 players more dissimilar than Beck and Benintendi.

Maybe you should write another clown show blog entry about how they are similar.

You might have to overpay Vientos not to honor his Miami commitment, though. I'd be pretty cool with Beck and Vientos, even with Vientos dropping down boards.

Maybe, but I haven't heard anything about him being a bigger risk to go to college than anybody else, and generally if you take a HS player in the first 2-3 rounds, there's no real risk of them going to school.

Generally because they don't get drafted if they won't commit to a bonus range these days.

True, but I've seen nothing to indicate Vientos is one of those guys who will demand top dollar or go to school.
