He's almost this year's Ben Sheets, except we may legitimately have to use him in the playoffs.

That's a path like diving off a cliff is a shortcut. Might get you where you are going, but you'll be in no shape to enjoy it.

So we are 8 up on the Nats with 12 to play?

They play the Marlins, @Cards, @DBacks
    We play @Cubs, Brewers, Phillies

Nats are playing great ball, and I see them sweeping the Marlins but not doing much against the Cards and DBacks.

My thoughts as well. The long run is comprised of a bunch of short runs and we are in a down cycle right now.

People wonder why I don't go all gaga over Minor and said I'd flip a coin between him and Medlen, but today is an example of why I feel that way. Big game that could put a spike in the coffin and he comes out and gives up a three-spot in the first.

For all the barking about Garcia, he's done fairly well in his last two starts. I don't look to him as a savior in any way and if he's on the 40-man through the winter, I'll sob (not really). But if Minor--of whom such a performance should be expected--would have done what Garcia did today, the magic number would be 2.

Agreed. Even if we did rally and then blow it later, it's way harder to win when you're down early constantly. He has got to grow more of backbone in those situations.

I woke up in more disbelief that we lost that first game. When Kimbrel does melt down, he really does it at the worst possible times.

In 5 years we will look back and laughed at this, but that is completely true about Kimbrel. He doesn't give up anything before the playoff stretch. Then he seems to be a bit off down the stretch every year.

Agreed on Kimbrel. Undoubtedly tired (mentally and physically) and pressing a bit.

He just seems to think too much in situations like these.

In 2010, he lost Game 3 of the NLDS, although he had some very poor luck in that ninth inning.

    Since he became full-time closer:

2011: Blew three saves in Sept. after having gone since May 18 without blowing one. One against Cardinals, one against Marlins and the season finale against the Phillies.
2012: He was pretty legendary. Only three scattered throughout the year.
2013: Blew one yesterday after having gone since May 7 without one.

This isn't to single him out. He's just critical to our success and we need him at this time of year more than ever.

Depending on the importance he placed in the WBC, I believe he blew one there.

I think everybody's worn out right now, mentally and physically. There isn't a pennant race to keep guys sharp. As important as HFA might be, it's just not as immediate a motivator as fighting for your playoff lives. I just think we need to clinch and relax.

2011 I'm about 99% sure his blown saves were fatigue. Remember in 11 Fredi marched him and Johnny out there damned near every other day.

Yesterday was some bad luck for him. Sure the walks are what really killed him but he gave up one hit and the best SS in baseball made a bad error. Washington was stupid lucky yesterday. You don't score 6 runs on 11 baserunners too often, especially with only one double. Meanwhile we scored 5 on 9 but had 2 doubles and a homer. Teams were equal on stolen bases and errors. So the nats had 2 more men get on via the BB. Braves had an extra double and homer. Braves should have scored more runs and should have won. But we didn't. Sometimes the ball bounces that way.

True, but again you can't walk people and expect to come out with good results there. If he goes out there today in the same situation, I've got all the confidence in the world he'll get the job done.

And yeah 2011, Kimbrel and Venters were shot. This is happening to Avilan especially this year.
