First inning miraculously ends with only one run. Three walks, 26 pitches, 10 strikes, no Ks.

haven't seen this Newk before. he is all fastballs right now. missing barely on all sides of the plate. This might be just not feeling comfortable yet. I missed the first 4 batters however. Usually when he is wild, he is up and away to righties, and away from lefties. this is just a tight zone that he is not hitting yet. I think he will be ok today.

Not surprising he will have stints like this. What we need to be looking for is him getting it locked down before the end of the start.

I don't really understand minor league games this early. And that is not in reference to Newcomb struggling, I just don't get it.

I would say a 10:30am start isn't doing him any favors.

10:35 are for the schools. These minor league teams get huge school supports through May on education games. have to start them this early so they can enjoy most of the game before going back to school. they don't do them in the summer.

Just an FYI, in the most recent Longenhagen chat, he said when he saw Riley late last year, his bat speed seemed fine. He said his issue with him is more about his aggressive approach and that he projects as a 1B.

So if he can stick at 3B, that would be big for him. And perhaps the concerns about his bat speed aren't quite what they seemed to be.

He also said he's warmed a bit on Jackson, just can't find anybody who thinks he can be a catcher, so the question is whether the bat will profile at a corner OF or 1B spot.

The ump is more hindering him than the time.

JD just schooled Newk. Newk was up 0-1 and just wasted a FB outside.. not close. then nibbled with two straight slider/curve.. down 3-1 tried to sneak a FB inside and JD didn't take it. I felt another slider was the pitch to throw.. then a FB.

I think the issue with Jackson catching is that even if he could be a catcher it would take 3-4 years in the minors to be ready defensively. My hope is that he can be an emergency catcher if/when he is on the ML roster.

If we think he can truly get there, then it may be worth the wait. I'd rather have him be a catcher who can mash at 25 in 2021 than a LF who can mash at 23 in 2019, honestly. Especially if he's not going to be a particularly good LF anyway.

But yeah, if we think the odds of him ever being good enough at catcher aren't great, then it makes sense to move him through more quickly and stick him in the OF.

Underrated aspect of why stats for minor leaguers aren't the end all.

Newc doing a solid job of rebounding today. If he can get through 6 I think that's a strong developmental acheivment. He needs to be able to recover from a rough opening.

it is what it is. both sides have to deal with it. The G-Braves are not helping their pitcher either. They are literally swinging at everything. I hope they can get the 2 runs back soon. Newk has pitched better than his stats will show.

WIlson has done excellent today. Had back to back errors to load the bases and gets back to back ground outs and avoid any damage.
