    Is Freeman MLB's Best Hitter?

(Note that this happened well before the July 30 acquisition of Matt Kemp, so it's not about "protection.")

Similar to when Harper went on a tear two years ago I will say no. Trout, imo, is still the best hitter and player in baseball. His consistency from 2010-2016 is unmatched now that Cabrera has declined some. Even this year Trout has taken his game to a new level. With that being said, Freeman has put himself into a top 5 MLB hitters category.

If you're asking as of right now for this year, it's Ryan Zimmerman.

    Avg -- .393 (1st in MLB)
    Slugging -- .820 (1st in MLB)
    Ops -- 1.251 (1st in MLB)

    so it's not about "protection."
So, yeah, we can produce evidence that Dale Murphy was still able to connect without Horner in the lineup on a last place team too. Doesn't mean that not having Horner there for "protection" was a good idea. At least it helped the team tank well enough to get Avery!

Yes, most of us know that Freeman is elite. Somebody you can build a team around (despite brain dead posts that we should consider trading him). That is, except for at least one certain know-it-all who still insists that Heyward was better last season, and is the greatest thing since the invention of indoor plumbing.

I would also say he is one of the luckiest. The scary thing about Freeman is that coming into tonight his BABIP on the year was 347 compared to a career 342 mark. He's not lucking his way into the numbers right now.
