Personally I am a fan of separating what a player does on the field and what they do off the field. With that being said I don't think he did enough on the field to warrant a statue. And considering he was responsible for his own death I don't necessarily agree with it. If it was similar to what happened to Clemente then I would be pretty open to it.
The only way I put up anything honoring this selfish, immature diva is that the families of those guys whose death he was responsible for give it their approval. Keep in mind that if he had somehow survived, he would be facing jail time for manslaughter.
I think once his statue starts to become too expensive they will trade it to another team for a package high ceiling minor league prospect bobble heads.
But seriously. His career was to short to be statue worthy. He started 76 games and pitched less that 500 innings in 4 years.
Not really any of my business, but if a Marlins fan asked me I would say I wouldn't think it was appropriate. He wasn't good long enough and his death, while tragic, wasn't outside of his control.
And absent the huge career, I don't see why you would take on the rest.
There is no way you give that individual a statue even if he had a HOF stat line.
