Has anyone noticed Cumberland's infield pop up percentage? Never seen anything like it. That's a fatal flaw.

He's been an extremely weird player so far. Sky-high IFFB% (it was already high last year and has gone way up) but with a ton of walks and HBP (on pace to blow by what Didder did there last year), huge K rate. So he's not putting a lot of balls in play, and a lot of the ones he is are popping straight up. Yet he's still been productive offensively and over half of his hits have gone for extra bases.

Regardless, his K rate, especially as a college player in rookie and A ball, is not good and is almost certainly going to doom him. He's basically doing what Braxton Davidson has done, but a year older and at a lower level. I don't see him as a real prospect anymore unless his numbers drastically improve at some point.

I'd guess Sims since he's on the 40-man.

Won't survive with a 1.3 whip. Needs to stay down and continue to improve.

The vets seem to be righting the ship here lately. We need to give them as much time as possible to regain their value. Colon was one bonehead play from pitching a great game the other day.

    Holy rush to judgment Batman!

    JUST KIDDING. Good analysis.

Cumberland has some warts, but there could be the issue of getting the aluminum out of his system. Big-time college hitter who probably developed issues related to aluminum over wood bats. I'm sure he needs to make adjustments, but he's been doing the pro gig for less than a year. Old--age-wise--for the SAL, but not experience-wise. SAL tends to get a lot younger after the June draft when some of the college players advance to High A to make room for new draftees (and subsequent promotions from the higher rookie leagues). Cumberland seems to be getting it in May, so I'm holding out hope. He's been feast-or-famine and we'll see how it goes from here.

For the record, I greatly discount walk rates at the lower levels in the minor leagues, especially for college players like Cumberland who have played at a high level of competition in amateur ball. The standard deviation on pitching quality is really high in the lower levels and I'm sure there are a ton of pitchers who couldn't hit the ocean from the shore. Anyone with an above-average batting eye can probably stand with his bat on his shoulder and draw a fair number of walks.

Agreed... the positive is that he seems to be keeping that WHIP down his last handful of starts if my memory serves me correctly

    It's been coming down:

I think Sims before Newcomb. But as someone mentioned earlier, Medlin could beat both of them.

yeah Meds has no business proving himself in the Minors.. he either still has it or doesn't. give him a few more minor league starts and then throw him to the wolves. Keep Sims and Newk in AAA until August/September..

guys like Medlen (or his recent hitting equivalent Ryan Howard) should absolutely be required to spend a month or so in AAA to show what they can do at that level

I am not saying bumping someone.. but why if a spot arises. only loss would be some guaranteed money for them getting on an MLB deal. I wasn't implying bring Meds up right now. there is no role for him at this point. but if I need a starter all of a sudden and I am looking at my options on the farm (Newk, Sims or Meds).. I am going Meds even if he only had 3 minor league starts.

Weird but Tyler Pike just came in relief for Florida.

Edit: nevermind, game tracker was wrong. It was clouse.

Austin Riley goes 2-4 with a single, homer, two walks and no strikeouts in game one. Eight homers on the year for him.
