    Today In Baseball History: June

    June 1st:

    1923: In a 22-8 win over the Phillies, the Giants become the first team in the century to score in every inning of a game.

    1925: Lou Gehrig makes his only pinch-hit at bat of his career. It starts his streak of playing in 2,130 consecutive games.

    1937: The White Sox Bill Dietrich pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Browns.

    1941: Mel Ott hits 400th career home run. He also records his 1,500th RBI in the Giants 3-2 win over the Reds.

    1961: After just six games with the Braves, Billy Martin is traded to the Twins for Billy Consolo.

    1976: The Twins trade Bert Blyleven and Danny Thompson to the Rangers for Mike Cubbage, Jim Gideon, Bill Singer, Roy Smalley, and cash.

    1987: With Joe's win in the Indians 9-6 win over the Tigers, he and Phil Niekro become the winningest pitching brothers in ML history. Their 530 combined wins pass Gaylord and Jim Perry.

    1992: With the first pick in the draft, the Astros select Cal State-Fullerton infielder Phil Nevin. With the sixth pick, the Yankees selected infielder from Kalamazoo, Michigan, Derek Jeter.

    2007: After being ejected from a game against the Chattanooga Lookouts, Mississippi Braves manager Phil Wellman goes on an epic tirade. He kicks dirt over home plate, then draws the umpire's strike zone in it. He then picks up third base and throws it into the outfield, crawls on the pitchers mound and tosses the rosin bag like a hand grenade at the umpire. Before leaving the field, he picks up second base and takes it with him.


    2012: The Mets Johan Santana pitches the first no-hitter in team history in an 8-0 win over the Cardinals. He was benefited by a mistake call in which the third base ump called fair ball. Santana threw 134 pitches.

    1891: The Reds Charley 'Old Hoss' Radbourn records his 300th win in a 10-8 victory over the Boston Beaneaters.

    1935: Babe Ruth announces his retirement.

    1941: Lou Gehrig dies at age 41 from ALS. The disease would become known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease".

    1987: With the first overall pick in the draft, the Mariners select Ken Griffey Jr.

    1990: The Mariners Randy Johnson pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Tigers.

    1999: With the first selection in the draft, the Devil Rays select North Carolina high school star Josh Hamilton.

    2000: The Devil Rays Fred McGriff hits his 400th home run.

    2010: Ken Griffey Jr. announces his retirement.

    2010: After retiring the first 26 Indians in order,Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga appears to have pitched a perfect game when he induces a ground ball to first from Jason Donald. Though he was clearly beaten to the base, umpire Jim Joyce called Donald safe. After the game, Joyce saw the replay and tearfully admitted his mistake that cost Galarraga the perfect game.

    1888: The San Francisco Examiner publishes for the first time Ernest L. Thayer's poem Casey at the Bat.

    1902: In the Cardinals 11-9 win over the Beaneaters, pitcher Mike O'Neil hits the first pinch grand slam in ML history.

    1918: The Red Sox Dutch Leonard pitches his second career no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Tigers.

    1932: In the Yankees 20-13 win over the A's, Lou Gehrig becomes the first player in the century to hit four home runs in a game.

    1952: The Red Sox trade Johnny Pesky, Walt Dropo, Fred Hatfield, Don Lenhardt, and Bill Wright to the Tigers for Hoot Evers, George Kell, Johnny Lipon, and Dizzy Trout.

    1978: In the Cubs 8-6 win over the Braves, the teams set a ML record by using a combined 14 pitchers.

    1993: The Mariners select Alex Rodriguez with the first pick in the draft.

    2002: The Blue Jays fire manager Buck Martinez and replace him wit bench coach Carlos Tosca. Martinez was the fifth manager fired since the start of the season.

    2003: Sammy Sosa is ejected from the Cubs game against the Devil Rays after his bat shatters and exposes cork that was being used in it.

    2010: A day after his blown call cost Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game, umpire Jim Joyce is presented the team's lineup card by Galarraga. The two shared a handshake in a gesture of sportsmanship.

    1890: The Giants (Players Leagues) Tim Keefe records his 300th win in a 9-4 victory over the Boston Reds.

    1911: The Reds set a ML record with 13 players scoring a run in a 26-3 win over the Braves.

    1940: Warren Spahn of South Park High School in Buffalo, New York is signed by the Braves. The future Hall of Famer would win 363 games in his ML career.

    1964: Sandy Koufax pitches his third no-hitter in the Dodgers 3-0 win over the Phillies.

    1974: More than 25,000 fans attend ten-cent beer night in Cleveland for the Rangers/Indians game. An estimated 60,000 cups are sold. Fans start to get unruly in their behavior. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, home plate umpire Nestor Chylak stops play. The Indians are forced to forfeit the game, giving the Rangers the win.

    1986: Barry Bonds hits his first ML home run in the Pirates 12-3 win over the Braves.

    1998: The Dodgers trade Hideo Nomo and Brad Clontz to the Mets for Greg McMichael and Dave Mlicki.

    2004: In the Braves 8-4 win over the Phillies, 45 year old Julio Franco becomes the oldest player in ML history to hit a grand slam.

    2009: Randy Johnson records his 300th win in the Giants 5-1 win over the Nationals.

    2010: The Orioles fire manager Dave Trembly and replace him on an interim basis with third base coach Juan Samuel.

    2012: Carlos Correa is selected first overall by the Astros, making him the first from Puerto Rico to be selected as the top pick in the draft.

    June 5th:

    1874: Hall of Famer Jack Chesbro is born in North Adams, Massachusetts.

    1948: In the Phillies 6-5 win over the Cubs, Richie Ashburn extends his hitting streak to 23 games, tying the ML rookie record.

    1973: The Rangers select high school pitching star David Clyde out of Houston, TX and push him into immediate service. He wound up winning seven of his 25 decisions in his three years with the team. The Rangers passed on selecting future Hall of Famers Robin Yount and Dave Winfield.

    1974: Reggie Jackson starts a fight with A's teammate Billy North in the clubhouse at Tiger Stadium. Jackson injures his shoulder. Teammate Ray Fosse, trying to separate the two, suffers a crushed disk in his neck that ends his season.

    1981: Nolan Ryan issues his 1,777th walk, passing Early Wynn for the most all time.

    1992: Eddie Murray ties Mickey Mantle's record of 1,509 RBIs among switch-hitters.

    2000: The Marlins select Adrian Gonzalez with the first overall pick in the draft.

    2002: The Rangers Juan Gonzalez becomes the first native of Puerto Rico to hit 400 home runs.

    2008: The Braves Chipper Jones joins Mickey Mantle and Eddie Murray as the only switch-hitters in ML history to hit 400 home runs.


    June 6th:

    1892: Benjamin Harrison becomes the first US President to attend a ML game. He watches the Senators lose 7-4 in 11 innings to Cincinnati.

    1925: Eddie Collins records his 3,000th hit.

    1944: Due to the Allied invasion at Normandy known as D-Day, all ML games scheduled are cancelled.

    1957: In the bottom of the second inning of the Cubs/Dodgers game at Ebbets Field, the game is delayed due to poor visibility. After an 86 minute delay, the game is called, marking the first postponement due to fog.

    1978: The Braves select Arizona State star Bob Horner with the first overall pick in the draft and immediately promotes him to the majors.

    1990: The Yankees fire manager Bucky Dent and replace him with Stump Merrill.

    1992: Eddie Murray records his 1,510th RBI, breaking Mickey Mantle's record for switch-hitters.

    2003: MLB suspends Sammy Sosa eight games for using a corked bat against the Devil Rays.

    2007: The Padres Trevor Hoffman becomes the first reliever to record 500 saves.

    1892: In a 2-1 loss to Brooklyn, Cleveland's Jack Doyle becomes the first in ML history to record a pinch-hit, batting for pitcher George Davies.

    1966: With the first pick in the draft, the Mets select high school catcher Steve Chilcott, who would never appear in the majors. With the second pick, the A's select future Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson.

    1967: In a 4-3 loss to the Giants, the Reds set a ML record by playing in their 11th straight game decided by one run.

    1982: The Dodgers Steve Garvey becomes the fifth player to appear in 1,000 straight games, joining Lou Gehrig, Everett Scott, Billy Williams, and Joe Sewell.

    2007: With the Yankees 10-3 victory over the White Sox, Joe Torre records his 2,000th managerial win.
