    Doing some math:

    Garcia 12 m
    Colon 12 m
    Markakis 11 m.

    Total 35 million --

If the Braves were to shed Markakis in the deal they'd have the opening in the OF that some folks would like and 7 million to spend frugally. I assume some increase in payroll and maybe some other moves would free up the money to deal with increased salaries and/or more money.

I could see a second pitcher being acquired and Teheran being moved, but putting that aside:

    Verlander -
    Folty - break out?
    Teheran - bounce back
Dickey - Or Braves could decline the option for more cash
    Newcomb or the boys --

There is a good bit of risk there, but on some planets that is a playoff caliber rotation and one that might actually have a chance matching up in a series. On others, it is a disaster.

    All about risk.

If you are someone that doesn't want to deplete the farm and doesn't mind losing in 2018 and 2019 then this should not bother you too much aside from the actual cost in prospects.

*I'm just going with the semi-plausible idea that the Tigers might consider taking Markakis back (which is the same as throwing 11 million into the deal).

    good.

Let them gut some more of their farm system.

I really don't want to part with prospects for a guy with injury history and a contract that really doesn't fit our window.

If they took Kemp, we would have to give up more than just one top 10ish. I think there is all kind of scenarios in there however.. Something were they take Kemp and we send cash along with a top 10ish prospect..

Oakland is prioritizing young center fielders. They like the Yankees' Estevan Florial according to Jon Morosi.

Atlanta needs to stand pat this trade deadline (trade DatDude for a lottery ticket at least and see if anyone wants any of our bullpen trash) unless they are blown away with an offer.

With DPete coming around and Acuna...Coppy's main objective should be moving the concrete blocks in left and right. Pitcher should be secondary unless we trade Julio. We have plenty of guys to fill one spot.

I think this is also possible, and would be a good way to reduce the prospect haul going to Oakland.

Casuals always do this type of math...incorrectly.

A huge chunk of that money being "freed up" is already going towards raises to other players.

The Tigers are not trading Verlander without getting a significant prospect return. That only happens if they include money.

Last time I did this calc, I think Verlander had something like -$10M in surplus value. If the Tigers want a Top 50 guy for Verlander, they will have to eat about $30M-$40M to make the value even.

Would folks be happy with Verlander at $10M per year for 2 years in exchange for Allard? Could be palatable if you aren't high on Allard (some folks are convinced he is too small with no out pitch, so maybe it works).

Yeah...I think the A's would love to have Gohara. Not sure why this point has been brought up so many times

It's nice that you think this, but the available information states they are prioritizing OFers.

Hopefully they over value DPete due how MLB-ready he is.

Gohara is the Brazilian C.C. Sabathia.

Parting with him would be a mistake.

Mallex is having a very good season. I think the values would be equal still.. I doubt many teams would take Smyly for Mallex or Gohara.

BP did their mock trade of Gray:

    http://www.baseballprospectus.com/ar...rticleid=32356

It came down to choosing between 3 offers:

Houston: Martes (Top 20, on 25 man roster), Fisher (#54), Reed (former top guy, has fallen off)

Colorado: Pint (#66), McMahon (#67), Hoffman (controllable pitcher on 25 man roster)

Cleveland: Mejia (#16, #1 at C), Bradley (#6 at 1B), Naquin (4th OFer type on 25 man roster)

The writer playing the role of Beane took the Cleveland package.
