Mueller's investigatory mission "would naturally cover ties that a former Trump campaign manager had to Russian-associated political operatives, Russian-backed politicians, and Russian oligarchs. It would also naturally look into any interactions they may have had before and during the campaign to plumb motives and opportunities to coordinate and to expose possible channels for surreptitious communications. And prosecutors would naturally follow the money trail from Manafartov's Ukrainian consulting activities."

This part is important imo. Many around Trump and Trump himself had relationships with Russians that pre-dated the campaign. I think certain things flowed from those relationships that are now causing a lot of legal and political problems.

Mueller's filing includes this footnote, which I think sounds an ominous note for the president:

The Special Counsel also has “the authority to investigate and prosecute federal crimes committed in the course of, and with intent to interfere with, the Special Counsel’s investigation, such as perjury, obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence, and intimidation of witnesses” and has the authority “to conduct appeals arising out of the matter being investigated and/or prosecuted.”

I'd be careful about taking a premature victory lap here.

I think the obstruction case against Trump is damned hard to make, particularly as some elements of it may reflect highly questionable behavior but are arguably within the legal powers of the presidency. It's also possible (though a bit out of the box) that the OSC has determined that it's legally problematic to indict the president on criminal charges, even if they believe he committed obstruction of justice. In that case he can't be a de facto criminal target, but their only recourse is to present their findings to the Congress and hand the keys to them.

Having said that, do note that you're crowing over the President not being currently considered a target of the investigation, while soft-pedaling the fact that he is known to be a subject currently under investigation. Seems like kind of a good-news/bad-news proposition.

No it won't, but our thoughts are irrelevant. If we're ultimately wrong, won't that be vindication enough for you?

Explain to the board why you think T's not in serious legal peril.

As I've said, I don't think Mueller will go after T specifically. I thing the institutions of govt will ultimately protect itself, and the POTUS, the way they always do. As long as he's neutered and his lies/crimes are revealed to the public I'll be happy.

Then if some legislation is passed to bring the President's power back into line with the other two branches, it will be a net gain. A presidential candidate must show their tax returns for last 10 years, for example.

Btw, you all do understand that that "subject" vs "target" distinction is purely semantics. Anyone who doesn't think Trump's face is in the dead center of Mueller's bullseye is telling themselves fake news. Of course, Mueller would want to keep Trump calm and lulled into a false sense of security. If Trump panics he's gonna fire the FBI and all hell's gonna break loose, or so we've been told.

Trump's Friday night massacre moment may have been March 10, 2017, when he fired 46 U.S. Attorneys and gave them 24 hrs to clear out their offices. Among them was Preet Bharara, who was about to come down hard on Deutsche Bank.

And yes, I know Clinton fired 93 U.S. Attorneys, but did he have them immediately kicked out of the bldg?
