As thewupk said above, bringing him back on September 1st as part of the 40 man roster would be the same as leaving him down the rest of the year.

With the way the FO has handled this, they'll probably bring him back on 8/31 and burn an additional month of service time for one game.

I'll take your word on that. I haven't looked into it much.

This FO is way to aggressive to compete. They could seriously screw this rebuild up if they don't slow it down a bit.

So if he's down till at least September 1st they gain another year service time?

Theyll do it a week before Sept 1st to prove it's not about the money but integrity.

Swanson accumulated 47 days of service time last season. If he stays down in AAA until Sept 1, that is 5 days in July, and 31 days in August. If he is called up in Sept but not on the 25 man roster, that is another 30 days, then 1 more in Oct.

That totals 67 days of service time saved. It would be the equivalent to the Braves calling him up for the first time 20 days into this season, and then leaving him on the 25 man roster the entire season.

So yes, I'm pretty sure this trip to AAA will buy the Braves another year of control over Swanson.

There is a downside though...if the Braves leave Swanson in AAA until September 1st, he won't be eligible for the postseason roster.

Every silver lining has a cloud.

    Then MLBTR says this:

    https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/...-triple-a.html

"From a service time standpoint, he’s currently just nine days away from reaching a full year, so it’s exceedingly likely that he’ll still end up with one-plus year of service this offseason. That’d still leave him on pace to be eligible for arbitration upon completion of the 2019 season and eligible for free agency in the 2022-23 offseason."

Someone is wrong, most likely us.

Though if he is 9 days short, and accrues none this year, the Braves still should get the extra year of control...

Just read that too. I'm guessing they assume that he comes back up or aren't accounting for the September call up on the 40 man?

At this point, they should just keep him down the rest of the year unless he is just tearing it up in AAA.

No idea, but possible. More likely scenario is we aren't calculating his service time correctly, or we are misunderstanding a rule about accrual.

One thing is for sure...I think...he's 9 days short of a full year, so if they don't call him up until rosters expand they get him for 4 arb years: 2020-2023.

I am almost positive that's the case...but I wouldn't bet on it haha.

Sept call ups DO accrue service time.

To get the extra year of control over Swanson, the Braves will have to leave him down all year, and then call him up next year a few days into the season.

    Nope, wrong again.

Swanson can be on the MLB roster for 8 more days this year, and then start with the club opening day 2018, and will still be 1 day short of accruing 2 full seasons after 2018.

    I think....

I've been obsessively looking but can't see exactly how much service time he's accrued this year. I do have a much better understanding of how it works but don't really have the numbers to do any math. He can't hit 172 days service time this year to gain the extra year but not really sure where to find how many he's at.

I thought you had to be on the 25 man roster to gain service time?
