    August 1st:

    1918: With two runs in the top of the 21st inning, the Pirates end the longest scoreless tie in baseball history, defeating the Braves 2-0.

    1923: Harry Frazee, who sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees, sells the Red Sox to a syndicate led by J. A. Robert Quinn.

    1941: The Yankees Lefty Gomez sets a record in a shutout by issuing 11 walks in a 9-0 win over the Browns.

    1945: Mel Ott hits his 500th home run.

    1957: In the Dodgers 12-3 win over the Cubs, Gil Hodges sets a new NL record with his 13th grand slam.

    1962: The Red Sox Bill Monbouquette pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the White Sox.

    1975: For the first of five times, Billy Martin is named Yankees manager.

    1977: The Giants Willie McCovey extends his own NL record with his 18th grand slam.

    1978: Pete Rose goes 0-4 against the Braves, ending his 44 game hitting streak.

    1982: Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1986: The Twins Bert Blyleven records his 3,000th strikeout.

    1994: Cal Ripken Jr joins Lou Gehrig as the only players to play in 2,000 consecutive games.

    2002: The Expos trade Cliff Floyd to the Red Sox for two minor leaguers.

    2005: Rafael Palmerio becomes the most notable player to date to be suspended for a positive PED test.

    2007: Royals manager Buddy Bell announces he will resign at season's end.

    1907: Walter Johnson makes his ML debut in the Senators 3-2 loss to the Tigers. Ty Cobb records the first hit off "The Big Train".

    1921: The eight White Sox players accused of throwing the 1919 World Series are acquitted by a jury.

    1932: The Cubs fire manager Rogers Hornsby and replace him with Charlie Grimm.

    1979: Yankees catcher Thurman Munson is killed when the plane he is learning to fly clips a tree and crashes 1,000 feet short of the runway at Akron-Canton Regional Airport. He had been taking lessons so he could be with family in Ohio on off days. Munson was 32 years old.

    1981: Bob Gibson, Johnny Mize, and Rube Foster are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1982: At a ceremony in Cooperstown, the USPS unveils a stamp in honor of Jackie Robinson.

    2002: Reds GM Jim Bowden is fined after he makes comments that compared a potential players strike to the September 11th terrorist attacks.

    2010: The Brewers and Corey Hart agree to a three year extension worth $26.5 million.

    1948: Satchel Paige makes his first ML start, pitching seven innings and leading the Indians to a 5-3 win over the Senators.

    1967: A's manager Alvin Dark is fired due to a disagreement with owner Charley Finley over player discipline.

    1979: At Yankee Stadium, 51,000 fans pay their respects to Thurman Munson, who was killed in a plane crash the prior day.

    1986: Willie McCovey is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1987: Twins pitcher Joe Niekro is ejected after he his found to have an emery board in his possession. He will receive an antomatic ten game suspension.

    2002: The Angels and Darin Erstad agree to a four year extension worth $32 million.

    2004: Albert Pujols becomes the first player in ML history to hit 30 home runs in each of his first four seasons.

    1935: Walter Johnson resigns as Indians manager and is replaced by Steve O'Neill.

    1948: Ernie Harwell broadcasts his first ML game, a 5-4 Dodgers win over the Cubs. The future Hall of Fame broadcaster took over this game for Red Barber, who was recovering from a bleeding ulcer.

    1971: Tommy Walker of the Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs pitches a 15 inning no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Albuquerque Dukes in the Texas League game.

    1980: The Mariners fire manager Darrell Johnson and replace him with Maury Wills.

    1982: Joel Youngblood becomes the first player in ML history to record a hit with two different teams on the same day. He drives in the winning run for the Mets in a 7-4 win over the Cubs. During that game, he is traded to the Expos. He flies to Philadelphia for their game against the Phillies and gets a hit for the Expos.

    1985: In the White Sox 4-1 victory over the Yankees, Tom Seaver records his 300th win.

    1985: The Angels Rod Carew records his 3,000th hit.

    1990: The Braves trade Dale Murphy to the Phillies for Jeff Parrett, Jim Vatcher, and Victor Rosario.

    1993: After being hit by a pitch, Robin Ventura charges the mound after Nolan Ryan. Ventura gets head-locked by Ryan, who proceeds to punch him several times.


    1996: Jim Bunning and Earl Weaver are among those inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    2007: Alex Rodriguez hits his 500th home run.

    2010: Alex Rodriguez hits his 600th home run.

    1901: The Orioles Burt Hall punches umpire John Haskell, resulting in a lifetime ban from baseball.

    1921: A ML game is broadcasted for the first time. Pittsburgh radio station KDKA broadcasts the Pirates 8-1 win over the Phillies with Harold Arlin providing the play by play.

    1937: An Appalachian League game between the Newport Canners and the Johnson City Soldiers ends in the sixth inning when they run out of baseballs. Some fans show their displeasure by destroying a set of bleachers.

    1940: The Browns John Whitehead pitches a six inning no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Tigers. The game was called early due to weather.

    1973: The Braves Phil Niekro pitches a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Padres.

    1979: Willie Mays, Hack Wilson, and Warren Giles are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1986: The Giants Steve Carlton strikes out the Reds Eric Davis in the third inning to record his 4,000th strikeout.

    1993: Tony Gwynn records his fourth six-hit game of the season, tying the ML record held by Ty Cobb and Stan Musial.

    1999: Mark McGwire hits his 500th home run.

    2001: Dave Winfield, Kirby Puckett, and Bill Mazeroski are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    2005: Albert Pujols becomes the first player in ML history to hit 30 home runs in each of his first five seasons.

    2007: Tom Glavine records his 300th win.

    2010: The Rangers are sold at an auction for $385 million to a group led by Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan.

    2013: MLB announces the 13 players who had been involved with PEDs given to them by the Biogenesis anti aging clinic. All players except for Alex Rodriguez receive a 50 game suspension. Rodriguez, who had been connected with PEDs before, received a 211 game ban.

    1890: Cy Young makes his ML debut, getting the win in the Cleveland Spiders 8-1 win over the Chicago Colts. It was the first of his 511 ML wins.

    1937: In a 12-6 loss to the Cubs, the Braves become the first team in NL history to start a game with back to back home runs.

    1967: Brooks Robinson sets a ML record by hitting into his fourth triples play.

    1972: Hank Aaron hits his 660th and 661st home runs, breaking the record for homers hit with one team.

    1973: Roberto Clemente becomes the first Latin born player inducted into the Hall of Fame. After his death on New Years Eve helping send earthquake relief supplies to Nicaragua, the mandatory five year waiting period was waived for him.

    1981: The players approve a split season format made necessary by the strike. The Yankees, A's, Phillies, and Dodger are declared first half division champions and qualify for the postseason.

    1985: For the second time in ML history, the players go on strike during a season. This strike lasts two days.

    1988: Goose Gossage joins Rollie Fingers as the only relievers to record 300 saves.

    1999: Tony Gwynn records his 3,000th hit.

    2003: The Yankees trade Armando Benitez to the Mariners for Jeff Nelson.

    2006: The Mets sign David Wright to a six year extension worth $55 million.

    2010: The Braves retire Tom Glavine's #47.

    1907: The Senators 7-2 victory over the Indians marks the first of Walter Johnson's 417 career wins.

    1943: In a 9-6 loss to the Phillies, the Giants tie a NL record by leaving 18 runners on base.

    1951: At age 51, Satchel Paige doubled and got in the win in the Miami Marlins 6-2 win over the Columbus Jets at the Orange Bowl. A crowd of 51,000, the largest to attend a minor league game, watched the International League contest.

    1969: Phillies manager Bob Skinner resigns and is replaced by third base coach George Myatt.

    1978: Mel Allen and Red Barber both receive the first Ford C. Frick Broadcasting Award.

    1982: After a young boy is hit by a line drive at Fenway Park, the Red Sox Jim Rice jumps into the stands and runs him to a waiting ambulance. His actions are credited to possibly saving the boy's life.

    1985: The two day old strike ends when the players and owners agree to a new five year CBA. The new agreement increases salary arbitration eligibility from two years to three years.

    1999: A home run off the Indians Chris Haney marks the 3,000th hit for Wade Boggs. As he rounds the bases, he blows a kiss to the sky in memory of his mother, then kisses home plate.


    2001: During his signing of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at Wrigley Field, former Chicago Bears player Steve McMichael tells the crowd "he'll have a talk with the ump", referring to plate umpire Angel Hernandez after a close call he made. He then blows a kiss to Hernandez, who has McMichael ejected from the ballpark.

    2001: The Braves Greg Maddux breaks the NL record held by Christy Mathewson and Randy Jones of 68 straight innings without issuing a walk.

    2002: ML players agree to random tests for steroids starting the next season.

    2004: The Cubs Greg Maddux records his 300th win.

    2007: Barry Bonds hits his 756th* career home run, passing Hank Aaron for the most all time.

    2016: The Marlins Ichiro Suzuki records his 3,000th hit.

    1988: The scheduled first night game to be played at Wrigley Field is called off in the third inning against the Phillies due to rain.

    1998: With his 500th steal, Paul Molitor joins Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Eddie Collins, and Lou Brock as the only players with 3,000 hits and 500 stolen bases.

    2002: In the Braves 114th game of the season, John Smoltz becomes the quickest to record 40 saves in a year.

    1946: For the first time in ML history, all game scheduled in the majors are played at night.

    1975: In the Dodgers 2-0 win over the Mets, Davey Lopes still his 32nd straight base, breaking the ML record.

    1976: Umpire Cal Hubbard is inducted into the Hall of Fame, making him the first to enter two halls. He was also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963 for his career with the Giants and Packers.

    1976: The Pirates John Candelaria pitches a no-hitter against the Dodgers, the first in Pittsburgh since 1907.

    1981: In a delayed All Star Game due to the strike, the NL wins 5-4 at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium.

    1988: The Cubs defeat the Mets 6-4 in the first official night game at Wrigley Field. The first scheduled night game the prior evening against the Phillies was called off in the third inning due to weather.

    1998: In the Braves 7-5 victory over the Giants, Dennis Martinez records his 244th win, making him the winningest Latin pitcher in ML history.

    1999: Five grand slams are hit in a day for the first time in ML history. The Cardinals Fernando Tatis, the Expos Jose Vidro, the Marlins Mike Lowell, the Yankees Bernie Williams, and the Mariners Jay Buhner each hit the slams.

    2002: Barry Bonds joins Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays as the only players in ML history with 600 home runs.

    2010: The Mariners fire manager Don Wakamatsu and replace him with Daren Brown from AAA Tacoma.

    2010: The Reds acquire Jim Edmonds from the Brewers for Chris Dickerson.

    1889: Giants pitcher Mickey Welch becomes the first pinch-hitter in ML history, striking out during a 9-6 win over the Hoosiers in Indianapolis.

    1971: Harmon Killebrew hits his 500th home run.

    1974: At age 14, Jorge Lebron makes his professional debut for the Auburn Phillies short season Class A team. Believed to be the youngest player in professional baseball history, he played three games before returning to Puerto Rico to finish junior high school.

    1981: Pete Rose records his 3,631st hit, breaking the NL record. Stan Musial, who's record Rose broke, congratulates him on the field.

    1989: After a 15 month recovery from cancer surgery, the Giants Dave Dravecky pitches seven innings of one hit ball in a 4-3 win over the Reds.

    1995: With the Dodgers trailing the Cardinals 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, fans at Dodger Stadium start throwing souvenir baseballs on the field for the third time. The thrown baseballs force the Dodgers to forfeit the game. It was the first time in 16 years a team had to forfeit a game in the majors.

    1998: During the Marlins 3-2 win over the Padres in San Diego, Harry and Hunter Wendlestedt become the first father and son to work on the same umpiring crew in ML history. Father Harry was behind the plate with Hunter at third base.

    2001: Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau dies at age 84.

    2002: Barry Bonds is intentionally walked for the 46th time this season, breaking the ML record.

    1907: In a doubleheader nightcap, the Cardinals Ed Karger pitched a seven inning perfect game in a 4-0 win over the Braves. The two teams agreed beforehand to shorten the game to seven innings.

    1929: Babe Ruth hits his 500th home run.

    1950: The Braves Vern Bickford pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Dodgers.

    1961: The Braves Warren Spahn wins his 300th game.

    1970: The Phillies Jim Bunning becomes the first pitcher since Cy Young to win 100 games in both leagues. In the AL, he won 118 games with the Senators.

    1980: Reggie Jackson hits his 400th home run.

    1987: The A's Mark McGwire hits his 38th home run, breaking the AL rookie record.

    1991: The White Sox Wilson Alvarez pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Orioles.

    2003: Needing just 134 games to do so, the Cubs Kerry a Wood becomes the fastest pitcher in ML history to record 1,000 strikeouts.

    2008: The Reds trade Adam Dunn to the Diamondbacks for Dallas Buck and two,players to be named later.

    1880: Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson is born in Factoryville, Pennsylvania.

    1948: In a 26-3 win over the Browns, the Indians set a ML record with 14 different players collecting a hit.

    1976: The directors of the new Toronto AL franchise announces the team will be known as the Blue Jays.

    1984: Don Drysdale, Pee Wee Reese, Harmon Killebrew, Rick Ferrell, and Luis Aparaicio are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

    1984: Braves pitcher Pascual Perez hits Padres leadoff hitter Alan Wiggins with the game's first pitch. It sets the stage for several confrontations that includes the Padres pitchers throwing at Perez.


    1987: The Braves trade Doyle Alexander to the Tigers for minor league pitcher John Smoltz.

    1988: With a 9-4 win over the Tigers, the Red Sox break the ML record with their 23rd straight home win.

    1994: The eighth work stoppage in ML history begins. It's the longest one, lasting 232 days and causing the cancellation of the postseason and World Series and a delayed start to the 1995 season.

    2001: An intentional walk ordered by Braves manager Bobby Cox ends Greg Maddux's streak at 70.1 innings without issuing a walk, which was a NL record.

    2008: On what would have been his 69th birthday, over a thousand fans attend a memorial at Turner Field to honor Braves broadcaster Skip Caray, who passed away August 3rd.

    2013: The Phillies Charlie Manuel records his 1,000th managerial win.

    1947: In the Browns 6-5 win over the Tigers, Williard Brown becomes the first black player to hit a home run in AL history.

    1963: Warren Spahn extends his career total of strikeouts to 2,382, breaking Rube Waddell's record for left handers.

    1969: The Orioles Jim Palmer pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the A's.

    1969: After serving in the interim following William Eckert, Bowie Kuhn is elected by the owners to a seven year term to be the fifth commissioner of baseball.

    1979: Lou Brock records his 3,000th hit.

    1995: Mickey Mantle dies at age 63.

    2007: Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto dies at age 89.

    2010: The Giants acquire Jose Guillen from the Royals.

    1914: In the Dodgers 8-7 loss to the Phillies, Jake Daubert sets a NL record with four sacrifices.

    1916: In a classic pitchers duel, Babe Ruth and the Red Sox defeat Walter Johnson and the Senators 1-0 in 13 innings.

    1954: With a 3-1 defeat to the Indians, the Orioles lose their 27th straight road game.

    1975: Orioles manager Earl Weaver is ejected by umpire Ron Luciano in the first game of a doubleheader, then gets ejected by him again before the nightcap.

    1989: In the second inning against the Expos, in his second start since returning from cancer surgery, Giants pitcher Dave Dravecky breaks his arm throwing a pitch to Tim Raines. He collapses to the ground in pain after the humerus bone snaps between the shoulder and elbow. The sound of the bone breaking could be heard through the ballpark.

    1990: The Phillies Terry Mulholland pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Giants.

    1993: A 6-4 Rangers victory over the Indians marks the last of Nolan Ryan's 324 career wins.

    1999: In the first inning of the Angels 10-2 win over the Tigers, Chuck Finley becomes the first pitcher in ML history to strike out four batters in an inning twice.

    2011: Jim Thome hits his 600th career home run.

    2012: The Mariners Felix Hernandez pitches a perfect game in a 1-0 win over the Rays. It was the third perfect game that season, making it the first time that had happened in ML history. The White Sox Philip Humber and the Giants Matt Cain were the other two to do so.

    2012: The Giants Melky Cabrera, who won the All Star Game MVP that season, is suspended 50 games after a positive test for testosterone and will miss the remainder of the season.

    1920: Indians shortstop Ray Chapman suffers a fractured skull when he is hit in the head by a pitch from the Yankees Carl Mays. He died the following morning, making him the first on field fatality in ML history.

    1948: Babe Ruth dies of throat cancer at the age of 53.

    1954: With the Braves Eddie Mathews gracing the cover, the first issue of Sports Illustrated hits newsstands.

    1966: Willie Mays hits his 534th home run, tying Jimmie Foxx for the most among right handed hitters.

    1973: At the annual Summer meetings, a proposal for interleague play starting the next season is introduced. All AL owners vote yes, but all NL owners voted no.

    1996: Due to a conflict with the Republican National Convention in San Diego, the Padres game against the Mets is moved to Monterrey, Mexico. The Padres 15-10 win is the first game in ML history to be played outside the United States and Canada.

    2001: The Red Sox fire manager Jimy Williams and replace him on an interim basis with pitching coach Joe Kerrigan.

    2002: The executive board of the MLBPA sets a strike date for August 30th.

    2005: At age 87, Bobby Bragan of the Independent League's Fort Worth Cats becomes the oldest manager in baseball history. His one day employment ends in the third inning when he is ejected for arguing balls and strikes.

    2009: Derek Jeter breaks Luis Aparaicio's record for shortstops of 2,673 hits.

    2012: The owners unanimously approve the sale of the Padres to a group led by Ron Fowler. Among those in the new ownership group is San Diego native and pro golfer Phil Mickelson.

    2013: The Phillies fire manager Charlie Manuel and replace him with Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg.

    1894: John Wadsworth of the Louisville Colonels sets a NL record by allowing 28 singles in a 29-4 loss to the Phillies.

    1904: Jesse Tannehill of the Boston Americans pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the White Sox.

    1909: Nap Lajoie resigns as Cleveland's manager.

    1966: Willie Mays hits his 535th career home run, making him the all time leader among eight handed hitters.

    1973: At Shea Stadium, Willie Mays hits the last of his 660 career home runs.

    1984: A stamp honoring Roberto Clemente is unveiled in his home town of Carolina, Puerto Rico.

    1984: After six years away, Pete Rose returns to the Reds, going 2-4 a day after being acquired from the Expos.

    1986: Reds player/manager Pete Rose makes his final plate appearance, striking out in the eighth inning against Padres future Hall of Famer Goose Gossage.

    1990: The White Sox Carlton Fisk hits his 328th home run as a catcher, breaking Johnny Bench's record.

    1992: The Dodgers Kevin Gross pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Giants.

    1999: The Orioles Jesse Orosco makes his 1,072nd pitching appearance, breaking Dennis Eckersley's all time record.

    2002: The Yankees Alfonso Soriano becomes the first second baseman to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases.

    2008: In the fifth inning of an 11-8 loss to the Twins, the Mariners R.A. Dickey ties a single inning ML record with four wild pitches.

    2013: The Royals Miguel Tejada is suspended 105 games because of multiple positive tests for Adderall.
