    Today In Baseball History: August (Part 2)

    Had to make another thread because for some reason, the past few days weren't showing up

    1886: Chicken Wolf of Louisville hits a game winning home run due to a stray dog grabbing the pants leg of Reds center fielder Abner Powell, causing him to miss the ball.

    1939: Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski is born in Southampton, New York.

    1949: The Yankees buy Johnny Mike from the Giants for $40,000.

    1956: Hall of Famer Paul Molitor is born in St. Paul, Minnesota.

    1965: Thinking his return throws to Sandy Koufax are too close to his head, Juan Marichal attacks the Dodgers catcher Johnny Rosboro with his bat, starting a brawl between the two rival teams. Roseboro suffered cuts to his head in the 14 minute fight.

    1989: By striking out Rickey Henderson, Nolan Ryan becomes the first and only pitcher in ML history to record 5,000 strikeouts.

    1999: Mark McGwire becomes the first player in ML history to record four straight seasons of 50 home runs.

    2000: After pitching a scoreless 12th inning in a 7-6 win over the Braves, Rockies catcher Brent Mayne becomes the first position player since Rocky Colavito in 1968 to be the winning pitcher.

    2000: The Reds Alex Ochoa hits the 142nd grand slam in MLB this season, breaking the record.

    2007: In the first of a doubleheader against the Orioles, the Rangers become the first team post 1900 to score 30 runs in a game, winning 30-3. They win the nightcap 9-7, breaking the AL record for runs scored in a doubleheader.

    2011: The Cardinals Matt Holliday is forced to leave a game in the eighth inning when a moth gets stuck deep in his ear. A trainer uses a utensil to get the moth out, which came out still alive.

    2012: The A's Bartolo Colon is suspended 50 games due to a positive test for testosterone.

    1906: With a 4-1 victory over the Senators, the White Sox win their 19th straight game to set a new AL record (since broken).

    1907: In a game shortened to five innings, the Pirates Howie Camnitz pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Giants.

    1936: Bob Feller makes his first ML start, striking out the first eight hitters he faces, recording a total of 15 strikeouts in the Indians 4-1 win over the Browns.

    1958: In the Dodgers 10-1 win over the Braves, Gil Hodges sets a new NL record with his 14th career grand slam.

    1982: Mariners pitcher Gaylord Perry is ejected after being caught applying a foreign substance to the baseball.

    1989: Pete Rose agrees to a lifetime ban due to allegations he bet on baseball.

    1998: Barry Bonds hits his 400th career homer, making him the first player with 400 home runs and 400 stolen bases.

    2001: The Diamondbacks Randy Johnson becomes the first pitcher in ML to record 300 strikeouts in four straight seasons.

    2002: Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm dies at age 80.

    2011: The Angels and Jered Weaver agree to a five year contract extension worth $85 million.

    1919: With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Indians pitcher Ray Caldwell gets struck by lightning and is knocked unconscious. Needing one out for the win, he refuses to leave the game. He gets that last out in a 2-1 win over the A's.

    1951: In another idea by owner Bill Veeck, 1,000 Browns fans behind the dugout are given yes and no cards to vote on decisions by the coaches. The fans decisions seems to work as the Browns beat the A's 5-3.

    1960: Cal Ripken Jr is born in Havre de Grace, Maryland.

    1963: The Little League World Series is shown on TV for the first time. ABC televises the championship game in which Granada Hills, CA defeat Stratford, CT 2-1.

    1971: Ernie Banks hits the last of his 512 career home runs.

    1974: In the Dodgers 3-0 win over the Cardinals, Davey Lopes ties a NL record with five stolen bases.

    1975: The Giants Ed Halicki pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Mets.

    1975: The Dodgers Davey Lopes sets a ML record with his 38th consecutive stolen base. In the 12th inning, his streak ends when the Expos Gary Carter throws him out.

    1980: Gene Mauch resigns as Twins manager and is replaced by third base coach John Goryl.

    1985: Don Baylor gets hit by a pitch for the 189th time, tying the AL record.

    1989: Saying he believes Pete Rose bet on baseball, commissioner Bart Giamatti announces an agreement which bans Rose from baseball. In a news conference in Cincinnati, Rose defended himself, saying regardless of what the commissioner said, he did not bet on baseball.

    2006: Beliving he was robbed of a hit, the Tigers Sean Casey started to head back to the dugout. Instead, the ball glanced off the glove of White Sox third baseman Joe Crede and went to left fielder Pablo Ozuna. When he realizes it, Casey resumes running, but is thrown out at first in a played scored 5-7-3.


    2007: The Padres Greg Maddux becomes the first pitcher in ML history to win 10 games for 20 straight seasons.

    1916: The A's Joe Bush pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Indians.

    1939: NBC broadcasts a doubleheader at Ebbets Field between the Reds and Dodgers, making it the first televised games in baseball history. The games are shown on an experimental station W2XBS.

    1947: The Dodgers Dan Bankhead becomes the first black pitcher in ML history. In 3.1 innings of relief, he allows ten hits and six runs. In his first at bat, he hits the only home run of his career in a 16-3 loss to the Pirates.

    1962: The Twins Jack Kralick pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the A's.

    1989: Trumbull, CT defeats Chinese Taipei 5-2 to become the first US team to win the Little League World Series since 1983.

    1991: The Royals Bret Saberhagen pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the White Sox.

    1996: The Mets replace manager Dallas Green with Bobby Valentine.

    2002: For the first time, a live ML game is streamed on the internet. The Yankees 10-3 win over the Rangers is watched on MLB.com by 30,000 fans.

    2003: The Padres trade Oliver Perez and prospect Jason Bay to the Pirates for Brian Giles.

    2004: Ichiro Suzuki becomes the first player in ML history to record 200 hits in his first four seasons.

    2007: In the championship game of the Little League World Series, Dalton Carriker hits a walk-off home in the eighth inning to give Warner Robins, GA a 3-2 win over Tokyo, Japan.

    1918: The Cubs clinch the NL pennant with a 1-0 win over the Reds.

    1951: The Yankees trade rookie pitcher Lew Burdette and $50,000 to the Braves for Johnny Sain. Six years later, Burdette pitched three complete games in the 1957 World Series to help the Braves beat the Yankees.

    1966: The Beatles play their final concert at San Francisco's Candlestick Park.

    1971: The Braves Hank Aaron becomes the first player in NL history to drive in 100 runs in eleven different seasons.

    1977: Lou Brock streals his 893rd career base, breaking Ty Cobb's ML record.

    1985: Don Baylor is hit by a pitch for the 190th time, breaking the AL record.

    1989: In the first ever matchup of reigning Cy Young winners, Frank Viola leads the Mets to a 1-0 win over Orel Hershisher and the Dodgers.

    1993: With his 200th steal, George Brett joins Hank Aaron and Willie Mays and the only players with 200 stolen bases, 300 home runs, and 3,000 hits.

    2006: The Astros and Roy Oswalt agree to a five year contract extension worth $73 million.

    2010: A fly ball by the Braves Brian McCann is initially ruled a double. However, replay shows the ball over the wall and hitting a second barrier. The umpires correctly overturn the original call and giving McCann a walk-off home run and the Braves a 7-6 win over the Marlins. It marked the first game to end on a walk off after a replay review.

    1905: In his first ML at bat, 18 year old Ty Cobb doubled off the Highlanders Jack Chesbro in the Tigers 5-3 win, the first of his 4,191 career hits.

    1912: The Browns Earl Hamilton pitches a no-hitter in a 5-1 win over the Tigers.

    1916: The Red Sox Dutch Leonard pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Browns.

    1928: Tris Speaker strikes out in his final ML at bat, finishing his Hall of Fame career with a .345 batting average, sixth best all time.

    1950: The Giants Eddie Stankey ties a ML record by drawing a walk in seven straight plate appearances.

    1953: In the first of a doubleheader the Braves set a ML record by hitting eight home runs in a 19-4 win over the Pirates. In the nightcap, an 11-4 win, they hit four more to set a record for homers hit in a doubleheader.

    1965: Recovering from a broken hip he suffered the prior month, Casey Stengel announces his retirement as Mets manager.

    1975: The Braves fire manager Clyde King and replace him with scout Connie Ryan.

    1984: The Red Sox Jim Rice hits into his 33rd double play of the season, breaking the ML record.

    1984: The Expos fire manager Bill Virdon and replace him with Jim Fanning, who Virdon had replaced. It was the second time Virdon was replaced as manager by the man he succeeded. In 1973, the Pirates fired him and replaced him with Danny Murtaugh, who he succeeded as their manager two years earlier.

    1998: With a 7-5 defeat to the Reds, the Marlins lose their 89th game of the season, the most for a defending World Series champion.

    1998: Toms River, NJ defeats Japan 12-9 to become the first American team to win the Little League World Series since 1993.

    2000: The Braves Bobby Cox records his 1,600th managerial win, passing Tommy Lasorda for 14th on the all time list.

    2002: Hours before the potential strike date, the owners and players agree to a new four year CBA. The new agreement assures the players no team will be contracted through 2007 and a new revenue sharing plan to be implemented through the span of the contract.

    2004: The Braves Chipper Jones and his wife welcome a new child, a boy named Shea. It was named after the Mets ballpark, where Jones enjoyed a lot of success against the Mets.

    2006: The Red Sox Curt Schilling records his 3,000th strikeout.

    2015: The Cubs Jake Arrieta pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Dodgers.

    1957: Pitcher Steve Dalkowski of the Orioles Appalachian League team in Kingsport strikes out 24 batters, but issues 18 walks, hits four batters, and throws six wild pitches in a 9-8 loss to Bluefield.

    1959: In the Dodgers 5-2 win over the Giants, Sandy Koufax sets a NL record for a nine inning game with 18 strikeouts.

    1990: Ken Griffey and Ken Griffey Jr become the first father and son to play in the same lineup in ML history, helping the Mariners beat the Royals 5-2.

    1990: The Red Sox acquire relief pitcher Larry Andersen from the Astros for minor leaguer Jeff Bagwell. Anderson would pitch only 15 innings with Boston and retired after the 1994 season with the Phillies while Bagwell would go on to a Hall of Fame career.

    1992: The A's trade Jose Canseco to the Rangers for Ruben Sierra, Jeff Russell, and Bobby Witt.

    1997: Andruw Jones hits the Braves tenth grans slam of the season, breaking a NL record.

    2004: The Indians beat the Yankees 22-0, tying the largest shutout in ML history. The Pirates beat the Cubs by the same score in 1975.

    2005: The Marlins Jeremy Heremida joins Phillies pitcher Bill Duggleby from 1898 as the only players in ML history to hit s grand slam in his first ML at bat.

    2006: The White Sox become the first team in ML history to hit 200 home runs in seven straight seasons.

    2008: The Blue Jays trade David Eckstein to the Diamondbacks for minor league pitcher Chad Beck.

    2010: The Mets trade Jeff Francouer to the Rangers for Joaquin Arias.

    2011: The Pirates trade Matt Diaz to the Braves for a player to be named and cash considerations.

    2011: The Braves Craig Kimbrel records his 41st save, breaking the ML rookie record.

    2014: The White Sox trade Adam Dunn to the A's for minor league pitcher Nolan Sandburn.
