The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is an agency of the United States government responsible for consumer protection in the financial sector. CFPB jurisdiction includes banks, credit unions, securities firms, payday lenders, mortgage-servicing operations, foreclosure relief services, debt collectors and other financial companies operating in the United States.

This agency is a great example of the government working for the people. Very few people have the means to take on banks or insurance companies on their own. The CFPB is the only way most people can find redress in those cases.

Somewhat related to the above, the Georgia Insurance Commission does an outstanding job. I have called them multiple times with questions and have always been blown away by how helpful they are.

The last time was 2 weeks after a car accident. I had not been able to get the other driver's insurance company to return my calls (he was at fault). Finally I called the GIC, explained the situation, passed along the police report, my information, and the other driver's information. She said "We'll just see if they still ignore you after I call them."

The insurance company called me an hour later and bent over backwards to be helpful.

Just as an aside, there are policy proposals for Medicare-for-all-type sp programs. Rep Pete Stark's AmeriCare proposal dates back to at least 2007.

Single-payer is the right idea. Obviously, how we get there (read: financing and legislation) is another story entirely. But I think it can be done and I think it could be a winning issue for Democrats.

Having Kamala Harris co-spearhead the policy initiative is predicably idiotic tho.

    Immigration

    where to friggin start ?

    2016 platform:

The Democratic Party supports legal immigration, within reasonable limits, that meets the needs of families, communities, and the economy as well as maintains the United States’ role as a beacon of hope for people seeking safety, freedom, and security. People should come to the United States with visas and not through smugglers. Yet, we recognize that the current immigration system is broken.

More than 11 million people are living in the shadows, without proper documentation. The immigration bureaucracy is full of backlogs that result in U.S. citizens waiting for decades to be reunited with family members, and green card holders waiting for years to be reunited with their spouses and minor children. The current quota system discriminates against certain immigrants, including immigrants of color, and needs to be reformed to the realities of the 21st century. And there are real questions about our detention and deportation policies that must be addressed.

Democrats believe we need to urgently fix our broken immigration system—which tears families apart and keeps workers in the shadows—and create a path to citizenship for law-abiding families who are here, making a better life for their families and contributing to their communities and our country. We should repeal the 3-year, 10-year and permanent bars, which often force persons in mixed status families into the heartbreaking dilemma of either pursuing a green card by leaving the country and their loved ones behind, or remaining in the shadows. We will work with Congress to end the forced and prolonged expulsion from the country that these immigrants endure when trying to adjust their status.

I wanted to emphasize DACA but Friday (R) congressional leadership split with Trump and now publicly support Obama's program

We will fight to end federal, state, and municipal contracts with for-profit private prisons and private detention centers. In order to end family detention, we will ensure humane alternatives for those who pose no public threat. We recognize that there are vulnerable communities within our immigration system who are often seeking refuge from persecution abroad, such as LGBT families, for whom detention can be unacceptably dangerous.

We reject attempts to impose a religious test to bar immigrants or refugees from entering the United States. It is un-American and runs counter to the founding principles of this country.

Finally, Democrats will not stand for the divisive and derogatory language of Donald Trump. His offensive comments about immigrants and other communities have no place in our society. This kind of rhetoric must be rejected.

Giving a pathway to citizenship is not a support of legal immigration. It gives preference to a group of people over the rest of the world. The same with DACA. Why should we reward people who committed crimes?

    Infrastructure

“You can’t have a big league economy with little league infrastructure, and what Senate Democrats have is a big league infrastructure proposal,” said U.S. Senator Ron Wyden [D-OR]. “This proposal will streamline the tax code to provide incentives to promote investment and innovation in clean, renewable energy. And it will invest $100 billion toward the creation of a 21st century electric grid. These incentives and investments will result in lower electric bills for American families and create new clean energy jobs all across the country.”

Cory Booker — US Senator for New Jersey
    13 mins ·

The Trump Administration's decision to end DACA is a moral catastrophe that should shake us all to the core. The President of the United States has decided to tear apart hundreds of thousands of families and target hardworking young people who were brought to this country by their parents. In addition, President Trump is violating the trust that Dreamers placed in the US government when they came forward to comply with the law and apply for DACA.

Dreamers are productive members of society who contribute positively to our communities and boost our economy. Shutting the door of American opportunity and sending them back to countries they barely know is cruel, unjust, and flies in the face of what our country stands for.

Congress can and should circumvent this misguided decision by passing legislation that will protect the hundreds of thousands of DREAMers who are now facing deportation. Congress must also act to finally fix our broken immigration system and pass comprehensive immigration reform that offers a pathway to citizenship for millions of Americans living in the shadows, keeps families together, and lives up to our highest ideals and values.

    Health Care

But Sanders thinks support for the idea is growing, making future enactment possible. “You’re seeing it in polling, you’re seeing it in town meetings, you’re seeing the American people waking up and demanding that we end this dysfunctional system and we join the rest of the industrialized world.”

Yes we know. A terrible policy will be adopted because Obamacare was so bad that the idiots in this country will demand the government to save us from the government's failure.

The bill would revolutionize America's health-care system, replacing it with a public system that would be paid for by higher taxes. Everything from emergency surgery to prescription drugs, from mental health to eye care, would be covered, with no co-payments. Americans younger than 18 would immediately obtain "universal Medicare cards," while Americans not currently eligible for Medicare would be phased into the program over four years. Employer-provided health care would be replaced, with the employers paying higher taxes but no longer on the hook for insurance.

Private insurers would remain, with fewer customers, to pay for elective treatments such as cosmetic surgery—a system similar to that in Australia, which President Trump has praised for having a "much better" insurance regimen than the United States.

But the market-based changes of the Affordable Care Act would be replaced as Medicare becomes the country's universal insurer. Doctors would be reimbursed by the government; providers would sign a yearly participation agreement with Medicare to remain with the system.

There is a lot of debate to come. First off having 1/3 of (D) has never made law.
2nd off, after 7 years of yelling to repeal and replace when push came to hove there was no "replace" initiative

    .................................................. ......

BS: I think the evolution of health care in America—where today if you’re an ordinary person, with say a four-person family, you might be paying $15,000 or $20,000 a year for health insurance; where employers are paying a fortune, where deductibles are too high, premiums are too high, prescription drugs are too high—people are looking around and they’re saying: This is not working; we need to move in a different direction.

You combine that with the outrageous profits that the pharmaceutical industry is making, profits that the insurance companies are making; the high CEO salaries and compensation that these guys are getting; the fraudulent activity on the part of many people in the medical industry. Americans are saying: Enough is enough!

There is no question that the momentum is with us, and we are going to help lead that effort. But we have to understand that this is going to be a really, really tough fight, a very tough fight. We’ve got to be smart about it. Already, before the legislation was introduced, Republicans have made it clear that they see this as an opportunity to frighten the American people—by telling them that their taxes are going to go way up…
