    Today In Baseball History: September

    September 1st

    1890: In the first triple header in ML history, the Brooklyn Bridegrooms sweep all three games against the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, winning by scores of 10-9, 3-2, and 8-4.

    1906: In the longest AL game in history, the A's beat the Red Sox 4-1 in 24 innings.

    1909: In the Giants 9-6 win over the Cardinals, Bill O'Hara becomes the first player in ML history to steal two bases in one inning.

    1958: In a 1-0 win over the Reds, the Cardinals Vinegar Bend Mizell sets a NL record by issuing nine walks in a shutout.

    1967: The Reds Dick Groat ties a ML record for pitching 20 scoreless innings. In the 21st, he issues a bases loaded walk, giving the Giants a 1-0 win.

    1975: Tom Seaver becomes the first pitcher in ML history to record 200 strikeouts in eight straight seasons.

    1987: In the fourth inning of a 3-2 loss to the Cubs, the Astros Billy Hatcher is ejected when his shattered bat reveals cork in it. Hatcher claims he mistakenly picked up the bat belonging to pitching teammate Dave Smith, who used it in pregame batting practice.

    1998: Mark McGwire hits two home runs in the Cardinals 7-1 win over the Marlins, breaking Hack Wilson's NL record of 56.

    2007: In his second ML start, the Red Sox Clay Buchholz pitches a no-hitter in a 10-0 win over the Orioles.

    2014: Four Phillies pitchers combine to pitch a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Braves. Cole Hamels pitched the first six innings and was followed by Jake Diekman, Ken Giles, and Jonathan Papelbon.

    1917: The Phillies Grover Cleveland Alexander pitches two complete games in a doubleheader sweep over the Dodgers.

    1928: A's player/manager Ty Cobb records the last of his 4,191 career hits.

    1947: The A's Bill McCahan pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Senators.

    1957: In the Braves 8-0 win over the Cubs, Warren Spahn records his 41st shutout, setting a NL record.

    1961: Mickey Mantle hits his 50th home run of the season, making him and Roger Maris the first teammates to do so in a season.

    1975: Bob Gibson makes his final pitching appearance.

    1977: Japanese Star Sahaharu Oh hits his 756th home run, making him the all time leader in professional baseball.

    1985: The Angels Reggie Jackson becomes the first player to hit 100 home runs with three different teams. He also did it with the A's and Yankees.

    1990: The White Sox Bobby Thigpen records his 47th save of the season, breaking the ML record.

    2001: The Cardinals Bud Smith pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Padres.

    2007: The Mets Pedro Martinez records his 3,000th strikeout.

    1927: In the Pirates 8-4 win over the Reds, Lloyd and Paul Waner become the first brothers in ML history to homer in the same game.

    1928: The Braves start a ML record streak of playing in nine straight doubleheaders.

    1941: The Yankees clinch their third straight AL pennant with a 6-3 win over the Red Sox.

    1966: The Dodgers become the first team to draw two million fans both at home and on the road.

    1993: The Yankees Jim Abbott, born without a right hand, pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Indians.

    1998: With an 11-6 win over the White Sox, the Yankees win their 100th game, the earliest in a season a team had done so.

    2002: Scott Hatteberg hits a walk-off home run, giving the A's a 12-11 victory over the Royals and set an AL record with their 20th straight win.

    1971: In his ML debut, the Astros JR Richard pitches a complete game in a 5-3 win over the Giants. He sets a ML rookie record with 15 strikeouts.

    1995: Cal Ripken Jr plays in his 2,130th straight game, tying Lou Gehrig's all time record.

    1998: Barry Bonds sets a new NL record by reaching base in 15 straight plate appearances.

    2007: Bob Sheppard works his final game as Yankee Stadium PA announcer, a job he held since 1951.

    2014: Ron Washington resigns as Rangers manager due to off field matters. Tim Bogar is named interim manager.

    1973: The Pirates fire manager Bill Virdon and hire the man who he replaced, Danny Murtaugh.

    1981: Fernando Valenzuela ties the NL rookie record by pitching his fifth shutout of the season in the Dodgers 5-0 win over the Cardinals.

    1981: The Yankees fire manager Gene Michael and replace him with Bob Lemon.

    1995: Cal Ripken Jr plays in his 2,131st consecutive game, breaking the record held by Lou Gehrig. When the game becomes official, he takes a lap around Camden Yards during a 22 minute standing ovation.


    1996: Four months after surgery for throat cancer, Brett Butler returns to the Dodgers and score the deciding run in a 3-2 win over the Pirates.

    1996: The Orioles Eddie Murray hits his 500th home run.

    2002: The A's lose to the Twins 6-0, ending their AL record 20 game winning streak.

    2005: The Pirates fire manager Lloyd McClendon and replace him on an interim basis with bench coach Pete Mackanin.

    2006: The Marlins Anibal Sanchez pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Diamondbacks.

    1916: The smallest crowd in AL history, just 23 fans at Philadelphia's Shibe Park, see the A's Wally Schang become the first player in ML history to homer from both sides of the plate. The game was poorly attended due to rain that many thought would postpone.

    1925: Babe Ruth hits his 300th home run.

    1939: At age 20, The Indians Bob Feller becomes the youngest 20 game winner in modern ML history.

    1955: The Dodgers clinch the NL pennant with a 10-2 win over the Braves.

    1957: At the Polo Grounds, the Giants defeat the Dodgers 3-2 in their final game against each other before the teams move to California for the next season.

    1963: Warren Spahn ties Christy Mathewson's record of 13 straight seasons of at least 20 wins.

    1980: After his drug arrest last month, Fergie Jenkins is suspended by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn. Two weeks later, the suspension is lifted by an independent arbitrator.

    1985: With two hits against the Cubs, Pete Rose ties Ty Cobb's all time record of 4,191 career hits.

    1993: The Astros Darryl Kile pitches a no-hitter in a 7-1 win over the Mets.

    1996: Mets catcher Todd Hundley joins Mickey Mantle as the only switch-hitters to hit 40 home runs in a season.

    1915: Eddie Plank of the Federal League's St. Louis Terriers records his 300th win.

    1918: The Red Sox defeat the Cubs 2-1 in Game 6 to win the World Series. The Fall Classic was moved up after a shortened regular season after many of the players were drafted into military service for World War I.

    1928: Ty Cobb makes his final appearance in the majors.

    1956: The Reds Frank Robinson hits his 38th home run, tying the NL rookie record.

    1966: Nolan Ryan records the first of his 5,714 strikeouts, which was Braves pitcher Pat Jarvis.

    1985: In the first inning, Pete Rose singles off the Padres Eric Show to record his 4,192nd career hit, breaking Ty Cobbs record.


    1991: The Braves Kent Mercker, Mark Wohlers, and Alejandro Pena pitch the first combined no-hitter in NL history a 1-0 win over the Padres.


    1998: With an 8-2 loss to the Braves, the Marlins become the first team to lose 100 games a year after winning the World Series.

    2001: Terrorist attacks using hijacked planes crash into both towers of the World Trade Center and The Pentagon. Another hijacked airliner was crashed into a rural Pennsylvania field. All games in MLB are postponed after the attacks.

    2010: Jim Thome hits his 587th home run, passing Frank Robinson for eighth on the all time list.

    1930: The Dodgers Al Lopez hits the last bounced home run in ML history. The NL would join the AL, who did so in 1929, in enacting the rule stating a ball that bounces over the wall is a ground rule double.

    1953: The Dodgers clinch the NL pennant with a 5-2 win over the Braves.

    1979: Carl Yastrzemski records his 3,000th hit.

    1984: While striking out 16 Pirates, Dwight Gooden breaks Herb Score's rookie record of 245 strikeouts.

    1998: Sammy Sosa joins Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, and Mark McGwire as the only players to hit 60 home runs in a season.

    2001: For a second straight day, all MLB games are postponed in the wake of the prior day's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.

    2006: The Braves are mathematically eliminated from the NL East race, ending their run of 14 straight division titles.

    1883: Cleveland's Hugh Daily, with only one arm, pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Philadelphia. He lost his left hand as a result of an accident with a gun earlier in his life.

    1932: The Yankees clinch the AL pennant with a 9-3 win over the Indians.

    1936: In the Indians 5-2 win over the A's, 17 year old Bob Feller sets an AL record with 17 strikeouts.

    1965: Willie Mays hits his 500th home run.

    1971: Frank Robinson hits his 500th home run.

    1989: Fay Vincent becomes the eighth commissioner of baseball, succeeding Bart Giamatti, who died of a heart attack 12 days earlier.

    1995: Tigers second baseman Lou Whitaker and shortstop Alan Trammel set a ML record with their 1,915th joint appearance.

    2001: After the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington two days earlier, MLB postpones all games until September 17th. The postponed games will be made up following the week after the scheduled end of the season.

    2002: The Orioles Mike Bordick sets an AL record with his 96th straight errorless game at shortstop.

    2006: During the Padres 10-0 win over the Reds, Mike Piazza hits the last of his record 396 home runs as a catcher.

    2008: In the Angels 5-2 win over the Mariners, Francisco Rodriguez records his 58th save of the season, breaking the ML record.

    2009: Ichiro Suzuki becomes the first player in ML history to record nine straight seasons of 200 hits.

    2011: Mariano Rivera records his 600th save.

    1968: The Tigers Denny McLain wins his 30th game of the season in a 5-4 victory over the A's. He becomes the first to win 30 games since Dizzy Dean in 1934.

    1969: With a 7-3 win over the Indians, the Orioles clinch the first AL East title.

    1986: Bob Brenley, normally a catcher, ties a single inning record by committing four errors at third base. He would hit two home runs, including a walk-off in the ninth, to help the Giants to a 7-6 win over the Braves.

    1990: The Mariners Ken Griffey and Ken Griffey Jr hit back to back home runs, making them the first father and son to homer in the same game.


    1994: Due to the ongoing strike, 26 of the 28 owners vote to cancel the rest of the season, including the World Series. Baseball becomes the first professional sport to lose an entire postseason due to labor issues.

    1998: The Braves win the NL East with a 4-2 victory over the Phillies, their seventh straight division title.

    2008: The Cubs Carlos Zambrano pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Astros. The Astros "home game" was played at Miller Park in Milwaukee due to Hurricane Ike affecting Houston.

    1995: Ozzie Smith sets a ML record by taking part in is 1,554th double play.

    2000: With two runs scored, Rickey Henderson passes Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron for second on the all time list. The total of 2,175 run trail only Ty Cobb.

    2002: The Twins clinch the AL Central with a 5-0 win over the Indians, their first division title since 1991.

    2003: Rafael Palmerio joins Jimmie Foxx as the only players to hit 35 home runs and drive in 100 runs for nine straight seasons.

    2008: The Brewers fire manager Ned Yost and replace him with third base coach Dale Sveum.

    1959: Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg is born in Spokane, Washington.

    1963: Just 1,752 fans watch the Mets host the final game at the Polo Grounds.

    1968: The Cardinals Ray Washburn pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Giants. It comes a day after the Giants Gaylord Perry had no-hit the Cardinals.

    1976: Indians player/manager Frank Robinson singles in his final at bat, finishing his Hall of Fame career with a .294 batting average and 586 home runs.

    1984: The Tigers clinch the AL East with a 3-0 win over the Brewers.

    1996: In his final game with the Red Sox, Roger Clemens ties his own ML record with 20 strikeouts in a 4-0 win over the Tigers.

    1997: In a 10-2 win over the Mets, the Braves hit their 12th grand slam of the season, breaking the ML record. They also with the win, become the first team in ML history to clinch a postseason berth in six straight seasons.

    2006: In the bottom of the ninth, the Dodgers hit four straight home runs, with Jeff Kent, Russell Martin, JD Drew, and Marlon Anderson all going deep to tie the game. In the tenth, Nomar Garciaparra hits a walk-off two run homer, giving then an incredible 11-10 win over the Padres.

    2007: The Yankees Mike Mussina becomes the first pitcher in AL history to win ten or more games in 16 straight seasons.

    2008: With his 20th straight season of 13 or more wins, Greg Maddux breaks Cy Young's ML record.

    1907: The Pirates Nick Maddox pitches a no-hitter in a 2-1 win over the Dodgers.

    1924: The Cubs Grover Cleveland Alexander records his 300th win.

    2006: With a Red Sox loss to the Twins, the Yankees clinch their ninth straight AL East title.

    2008: The Cubs clinch their second straight NL Central title with a 5-4 win over the Cardinals.

    2012: The Nationals clinch a postseason berth, the first for a team from Washington since the Senators World Series loss to the Giants in 1933.

    2001: MLB returns to New York for the first time since the 9/11 attacks when the Mets host the rival Braves in front of 41,235 fans At Shea Stadium. Mike Piazza hits a dramatic home run in the eighth, giving the Mets a 3-2 win.


    2003: The Braves Greg Maddux becomes the first pitcher in ML history to win 15 games in 16 straight seasons.

    2008: The Yankees beat the Orioles 7-3 in the final game at the original Yankee Stadium.

    2008: The Rays clinch their first postseason berth with a 7-2 win over the Twins.

    2009: The Astros fire manager Cecil Cooper and replace him with third base coach Dave Clark.

    2010: With a 6-4 win over the Indians and the White Sox loss to the A's, the Twins clinch the AL Central.
